Well as the story usually goes, finally got a bus after a long patient search. It's been a 12 year hiatus from VW's and a chose a 67 Walk Through SO-42 that was formally brought back to life with plenty of support from Samba members. The original build thread is found here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=330028
This is my first Split and I couldn't be happier. We made the 11 hour round trip in a day and towed it home yesterday.
Overall the engine is seems strong, a lot of the rust work has been done and the interior is a blank slate that has most of the OG parts to be put together. There's still some holes, some dings and plenty of work to do but should be a running project.
Immediate needs are a shifter rod bushing, brakes bled, oil change, and get the lights in the rear working. Need to start thinking about shock mounts and e-brake installation. Future plans are to drive as is for awhile and get to know it. The camper area needs to be completely put together and I'm going to stay as stock as I can back there giving the amount of original pieces that are there. Will be looking for a replacement long table and z-bed. Won't be my daily but in sunny south Florida it will get plenty of road time.
More pictures, questions and comments to come as I dive in over the next weeks and months. I've got a ridiculous amount to learn but I'm armed with a Bentley and have a will to have a great bus to enjoy. Thanks to 67_SO42 for the smooth deal and the great save to this Westy. _________________ Darren

Congratulations Darren, 67_SO42 did a great job as I have followed his post most especially because I have the same bus, 67 Westy pop-top camper. I bought my interior panels from Clara and very pleased. I should be installing them once I get all the windows in when ever it decides to stop raining here on the east coast Wink
I try to put lots of photos and details of my project on my thread (or other threads) not only for others to learn but for me to remember Wink as this project is sandwiched in-between my job and family obligations. Check out my thread to help you with some interior work.

Thanks for the encouragement Linda. I lurked through your entire post while waiting to pick up this Westy as it gave me a good sense of what would be involved. My project is also sandwiched between my own business and family. One of the reasons I picked this one is that it seems to be a good running project that I can enjoy while I work on it. Any advice along the way will be welcomed.
It will be a little while before any major work begins as we just moved to a new place and getting that situated is a bigger priority. Soon enough though and I'm just happy to have found one. _________________ Darren

I started pulling out of few of the parts that are everywhere in the cargo area. Here's the current state of the long table:
Looks like the important pieces are there. The top is epoxied over and the VW emblem is raised so it's not exactly a flat surface. Any advice on reconditioning one of these?
Here's the Icebox:
I'll pull this out for a better shot at some point, currently in cramped quarters. Not sure yet if the small table is there, but the leg is. Better shape than I thought and I have a bunch of the t-molding to redo everything the the time comes. Nice OG sticker.
Couple of shots up front:

Very strange table top Shocked not sure what to do to remove that stuff.
Cool that you have your icebox and it looks in good shape, did it come with the child's cot or big tent?
How are the walls and ceiling? |
I was thinking of pulling that hardware off and making a new wood table top. No tent or poles. The cot is there but pretty tattered and not useable. The arms to it look fine. Anything that was fabric the rats destroyed before the PO got to it.
No headliner but there's clean insulation up there. There's a repop standard panel on the long wall and nothing on the doors. It did come with extra black panels but I'm planning on doing the rear in the stock birch. Poptop canvas was replaced already but needs the interior molding put back (came with). Don't think the "C" brackets are there for rubber pull downs. Hard item to find, correct Linda? _________________ Darren

Yes I still haven't the correct pop-top catch yet but it will show up some day. BTW I'm sure you already know this but if that insulation is the og fiberglass remove it and replace with the modern style that won't suck up moisture.

Finished pulling out all the parts that came with the camper. Looks like I need one small table for the door, the upper part of the z-bed (have parts that started being fabricated by the PO and might just finish building it), a fresher long table, a bed bracket and pop up "c" brackets for the hold downs. Here's some of the stuff:
The OG 67 Westy Hitch:
Spice Rack:
Headbanger:
Child's Cot:
Water Tank:
Cargo Area:

So as I'm peeling back the onion that is my bus, I notice the steering column tube is hanging on by just a thread of metal. I thought it was moving a bit due to the missing screws on the retainer plate, but this is a little larger issue:
The pic is from the drivers side and the passenger side is just as bad. There's just a couple of cm of metal holding it together. So it looks like I'll be pulling off the steering box and column. Is there an easy way to press out the column? I have read that I'll need to get a 64 -67 column because the wall thickness was increased. Is the tube a manufactured part I can get somewhere or should I start hunting for a used part? What else should I be gearing up to do while the steering box is out? _________________ Darren

Howdy!
Been crazy busy but Im glad to see you got the bus home safe and sound. I made it out to AZ and located the last of the parts for you and a huge pile of receipts as well. Those pop-top hold downs your looking for are in the one tupperware dish that had a little oil in it. Thats the last place I remember seeing them. I know they are there someplace. I will get you the front floor mat asap.
Keep up the good work on your new bus!
oh and i have a little index card with exact measurements for cutting all that foam I gave you for the cushions on the different sections of the westy stuff. _________________ 58 Binz #151 (looking for binz parts, let me know)

Slow and steady wins the race, I guess...
Progress had been slow but been working on it when my hectic schedule allows. Right now my bus is not running I've traced it down to some fuel delivery problem. My main fuel lines from the tank to the pump was trashed and leaking so I replaced all my lines with some Gates 30R9 hose. I figured the carb (Weber Progressive) was clogged but after looking at it it looks like the air intake lever is not operating correctly. Not sure if my terminology is correct but it not the throttle lever, but the other. Anyways it's out and I'm now waiting on a stock Solex to come via the PO. I'm going to start looking for a manifold to fit it. What else do I need to be thinking of when making the switch? Right now I've got an electronic fuel pump, an 009 electronic distribution & an unknown coil.
The other thing I'm struggling with is my SLOPPY shifter. It basically spins wherever it wants. Can move it entirely too far towards the passenger side. I can find gears but it's not the way it's suppose to be and not fun. Yesterday, I pulled the front shifter assembly out, replaced the front nylon bushing and cleaned out some rust inside the rod. It feels like the shifter pin doesn't want to stay in the groove. It's the og shifter and it looks like the correct longer version. I've done some searches but I'm stuck with what could be worn out. Any help? Here a weak picture of the front shifter rod to give an idea of where the shifter is fitting into.

Darren,
Just wanted to point you towards a Samba member and someone from my old neighborhood who is doing really nice, original style interiors for any camper style, if you end up going whole hog on your SO. Rick is a good guy honest and into VW's.
Check out his ad here. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1361164 _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

I started reconditioning a couple of SO42 small tables tonight. Trying to make the best two tables together from the three I have. The one original that came with the bus had a coat of black paint on top. Hand sanded it to reveal a nice original surface. Still has a black hue to it. Any suggestions on trying to clean it up more? Simply Green? Also the wood laminate on the back is gone on two of them. What's the best way to rejuvenate them?
If anyone cares, the length of T-Molding needed for a SO42 small table is 58 3/8". What part of the table does the molding meet itself (bus or user side)? _________________ Darren

I've been working on the bus a little here and there and constantly thinking and researching improvements and fixes.
Been working on my shifter problems. Details in this post: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=535356
In a nut shell it looks like a PO ground out the bracket that the shifter bolts to under the floor. Going to have to cut the floor to get at it. This will all be new to me as I've never welded. I have a couple of non-vw friend who weld who I'm planning to get help from and learn a bit. I received an e-brake/shifter assembly from a Samba member. It's an earlier part so not sure it's it going to work. I'll keep the other post updated.
I'm planning on my first engine pull to replace my Weber manifold for a stock DP manifold for a new Bocar Pict34/3 I got. Was able to remove the Weber but cant get the arms of the stock manifold in without pulling the fan housing. Getting a few parts and an engine stand before diving in. Any suggestions on other things to do or look at while its out are welcome.
Thought I would do some small tinkering and install these nice sliding window latch plates I got off the classified.
My driver's side was missing and my passenger side was installed wrong (inside the felt). The two new ones were a package deal and they're in better shape then the one I have.
Drivers side installed:
Passenger side installed improperly before my day:
So once I got the driver's side on I noticed that the felt notches don't line up with the metal notches. They do on the passenger side and it looks like the angled piece of felt towards the front doesn't slide up as far as my driver's side. There is a little gap at the rear of the window:
Also my slider doesn't open all the way due to the seals being messed up in the upper rear corner.
I have some new vent rubber coming so it looks like I'll be doing a few things to the window.
I took apart my sliding window latches. The seals need replacing and I need to get a washer and spring from my passenger side. Anyone?
Drivers side:
Happy New Year to everyone. My bus is my big resolution. I will have it on the road this year, sooner than later hopefully _________________ Darren

Nice photo layout
I have seen people say that a ball point pen spring is very similar but have not tried it myself. _________________ How to: Post Photos | Search
