Hi to all from down under in Aus, just wondering if anybody has any pix of a windage tray for a type four engine, one that is known to work and not restrict the return of oil to the sump too much.

Just fix the original one. It worked well for normal driving. I think Jake raby had noted that it tends to pool oil around the cam itself.....wider slots will help that.

I have also noticed in a few experiements that the red seals at the outside edges against the case...seal so well that once oil sloshes to those ares on cornering...it tends to stay on top of the tray until it can run to the center because it cant get past the seals.

A few strategic slots at the outside edges between the seals and center seem to help. In reality these should be louvers opening downward and inward toward the crank so that when you come out of a sweeping turn...oil that would slosh back toward center and wrap around the cam and crank will be intercepted and drained back to the case.

You want nouver and not just open slots because the louver has the same open area from the aspect of oil along the upper surface....but from oil trying to slosh up from below....it has about 1/3 the opening aspect.

I will see if I can find one of the two I have made mods to and tak a picture. Ray

Hi Ray,
thanx for that. I am a newby to type 4s so my hands on experience is very limited to what I have read. I recently read Hot VWs All about performance VW #3. After reading Jake Raby's story on the type 4 builds that he does, that convinced me that was the way I wanted to go with a heart transplant into a type 3.
I went out and bought a used 1800 AP engine which I couldn't wait to get a look inside. When I pulled it apart there was no windage tray in it. It had obviously been pulled down previously as the oil galleries had all been drilled and plugged.
I want to go with 96mm bore and 82 to 84mm stroke using probably about 5.5 inch rods.
I am not sure of what sort of clearancing issues there are with this particular setup but do understand that the cam is more of an issue in the T4 over type 1-3s.
Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Bob

Hi again Ray,
I have been seaching Samba classifieds and found a picture of a T4 windage tray in the 411-412 section on page 12 for sale for $32 which I would gladly pay if it were here in Australia but unfortunately the postage is a bit of a killer.
Thanks for your efforts Bob.

Just as a note...not all type 4's came with windage trays. For sure virtually all 1.7's in 411/412 (that i have seen) and in 914's came with a windage tray. Most probably the 2.0 914 did as well. The 1.8 in the 412...about half I have seen had one. The busses are kinda sketchy for windage trays. Ray
