Shocked Shame on you Shame on you Shame on you

Yeah, I dont know what thats all about. Even if you go on the Cal-look thread here on Samba they are not to fond of Vdubs with OG accessories, bumpers, body trim and some chrome calling themselves "Callook". Like I said, I dont know what HotVws was smoking on that one.Rolling Eyes

What a trip!! With social media & VW sites like Samba I have been able to reconnect with some of the VW guys that I knew back in the 80's and re-jog memories of those Golden years of the LA aircooled scene.

Guys like Steve:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

We were able to talk about mutual friends, like Tom from Huntington. Park who had one of the first Turquoise with white ragtops all OG Calstyle with venitian blinds (again the lowrider influence) on smoothies with whitewalls. In turn Tom got this VW from another OG Bugs Buddys member out of Puente. While Tom had Steve later paint his ragtop a sweet champagne color with bone ragtop/interior in his driveway!!...that's how us VW kids did things back then. (I hope some pics surface, as this VW was at all the Disco Cha-Cha venues cruising back then) Talking about Toms Ragtop & my experience affiliated with the Bugs Buddys, In my opinion the Bugs Buddys were the GFK's of their day & it's not a coincidence a former Bugs Buddys member Ruben N. founded GFK.

Going back to the whitewalls on smoothies, I remember it played out like this back then.
1980-81 we (again the lowrider influence) rolled on Remington 520/15 a lowrider tire with a 1 inch whitewall or we rolled on white smoothies with a Porsche 356 hubcap but with a Wolfsburg crest emblem with Michelin 135 & 165's.
Than 1982 the Detailed polished (or the new kids call mascara look) Fuch 911 Porsche Alloys hit the LA scene....now don't get me wrong the OC Cal Look had a few dudes rolling on late 6 original finish alloys but their wheel of choice was BRM's Centerlines, 8 spoke Empis..just like I was the only guy rolling on Speedwell BRMs in ELA (always an exception) but us LA kids were seeking out and rolling on deep early 6 hearts, 5 1/2, some 4 1/2 but they were polished/detailed "bling"!!
1983-1984 I started seeing fully polished Fuch Alloys by the Old Man with the paper hat in EL Monte on our LA Calstyle VW's and also at this time the guys that didn't have their alloys yet rolled on now a "Gangster" full white wall tire and the majority were the white inserts on black tires (remember we didn't have $$$ some other areas had).

I was there and this is how I remember it.......if someone knows different than let me know so we can correctly document our 80's LA Calstyle Look.

That must have been a fun day!!! Those were good days too. I remember back when I was a kid (mid70s) the lowrider scene was huge in L.A. I was lucky to have been exposed to both american cars as well as air cooleds as my dad worked on both and i got hooked on the wierdness of an aircooled motor. But movies like Boulevard Nights and the play Zoot Suit fed to the lowrider craze. Now we are also showing the world that besides lowriders, shortly thereafter we also did Vdubs well...

Its open to everyone to start, because as we know sometimes our bugs are down for the count. So join us in an alternate vehicle if you can. Alot of big names are involved in helping put the cruise together ie, The notorious VW-K-I-D-D, Alex The Original Bad Temper 2, CRG from the German Folks and I PMd Richie Rich of the TeddyBoys to ensure he knows cause he has been one of the key contributers to this thread. Details coming soon. PS. Peppers was the place in SGV for years.

For a moment there I thought this was my homie from back then Rene R. of the World famous Dukes Car Club (Zoot Suit Poster Fame) who had a yellow 64 that had tinted windows & the full hood bra...remember those bras we used to put on our VDubs around 79-81 they were all the rage.

Those that grew up in the 80s L.A scene know that it was a 2-headed monster. The club scene and the cruising scene. And while all the other clubs came and went, locales got torn down and moved around, The Casa was there from beginning to end. Support it...
