Yeah I made it out to BC and back in a weekend and never stopped by to say hi
It sure was fun though! I love it when people look so baffled by the bus when you cruise on by! Like a giant ancient steel dinosaur, creaking and breaking his way out of the mountain he was trapped in for millenia...it is now free to wreak slow-laned and mediocre-level havoc on the dopey 21st century. Speedy soccer moms beware! I'll be ahead of you, blocking you between a prius and a clunky geo metro...going 35 mph in a 40!!! MUAHAHAHAHA!!
Thanks Dan _________________ -Tony

Took advantage of a JoAnn Fabric 50% off sale this weekend for some 5" high density foam to repair my rear bench seat, which has major foam chunks missing currently.
After much debate with my constantly depleted checking account I opted for a light beige vinyl scheme to replace my tattered mustard yellow original. Someday when I can afford it I'll go with Major Woody repro maybe, but for now... and for $20 (yay red tag remnants!) to redo the entire interior... it's beige. Matches my front door panels and seats anyway.

You and Stuartzickefoose were right in a way. It is just two twin sheets that I sewed together then tied the VW emblem in and tie dyed. Here is the final pic. It came out ok, but you can see I didn't get enough die in the circle area of the emblem. Looks good enough for me though. At least it covers up the old ratty canvas!
That is what I did to my bay today! The end! LOL |
If you need to waterproof it, this stuff is killer...
west marine should have it in stock. It ain't cheep but it goes a long way. I have been in all night sidways rain and the top did not leak (everything else did including the rear hatch ) but the top was good. I put mine on with a cheep garden sprayer. _________________ Ken

Thanks for the tip. Right now I am not planning on using it in the rain. It is actually just stapled to the top, on top of the old canvas. The bottom is just rolled up for now. I figure I will use some sort of clamps to to clamp the bottom to the gutter when I have the top up. I eventually want to replace the canvas the right way, so I am not going to try to attach the sheet permanently. Course you all know how "temporary" sometimes turns out, so I will keep that water proofer in mind! LOL _________________ Kim

Indeed it is a pain in the ***, but I do like the way they work and function!
Plus both of them have a bug screen in them.
I just put it in the bus here is what it looks like.

Not done much, but the front brake hoses arrived, rather confusingly in a clutch plate box.
The table is installed. A shade crooked but apparently the hinges were a little crooked beforehand. The MDF is slightly thinner than the old chipboard so now I have the issue of the table sitting on an angle. Think I'll just leave it be.
Also wondering how the varnish stuff would work on crappy laminated chipboard. Ie paint the sides of the cabinetry to match the table. Maple would probably look nicer with the black laminate benchtop too but I don't know. Oh hey! Typing this made me realize, the old table is made from the same stuff. That'd make a great test subject.
Currently have it on ramps. Was going to swap the other half of the seatbelt but the weather has been bad. Realized I'm doing it ass backwards with the clasp on the wheel arch side but it wouldn't be long enough to poke through the seat the other way. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Replaced the donuts in the rear spring plate. Not a bad job at all. I put the back end on jack stands, removed wheels, painted lines across the bearing housing, diagonal arm, and spring plate, removed drums, removed the retainer holding the brake line to the diagonal arm, and removed the shocks. Then took the 4 big bolts out, suspended the wheel bearing housing as a complete assembly from the upper shock bolt. Pried the spring plate off of the lower stop and wiggled it off the torsion bar. Took out the horribly ovaled donuts and replaced with new ones covered in talc. The new rubber put it right back to factory spec. Bolted it all back up. A good day of wrenching. _________________ Third and Sixth owner of a 76 Westy

Nice. Don't have butt sag on mine but I do have to wonder the rubber condition. Are there urethane versions of the bushing? Don't mind squeaks and find urethane doesn't go all crumbly like rubber. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). | I help a friend in an auto resto shop, took my 72 bay tintop camper in to do an engine re-seal and clean-up, about 3 months ago. Then I got told it wasn't leaving the shop with-out a re-paint. Well, yesterday it finally saw the outside of the shop, in a fresh coat of Sierra Yellow, with white trim. New curtains, door panels, kick panels, rear area side panels, added some insulation and a rear carpet. Today it gets to be in the Mount Airy, N.C. 4th of July parade at the request of the director. Gonna meet Donna Fargo too! Gonna be a great day for sure. Might even get some pics up one of these days. Peace and have a Happy 4th! |

The old rubber was intact, just worn out. I got new rubber from Wolfsburg West- it appeared to be good quality. I don't think urethane is available, but then, who knows what is available in Australia. _________________ Third and Sixth owner of a 76 Westy

I have put all new rubber on my bus just recently, and it's worth it! Looks nice and seals properly - One peace of advice I can give, is be patient when putting in any type of window. |

We have our 5 year old grand daughter today, so not a good day to wrench on the bus. But she and I strategically placed some stickers on the rear windows.. A Harley sticker of course. A moose sticker. We like to go up in our mountains and watch the moose. Saw two yesterday. An Apple sticker which came with my I Pad. And a "S" for Sweden sticker because my grandparents came to the USA so their kids and grand kids could be prosperous and buy rusty VW busses. My gran daughter said the stickers looked great and we need more. I suspect that there will be more. _________________ If you only have one tool in your tool box, and it's a hammer, pretty soon, everything looks like it needs to be whacked!

Cut some masonite underfloor stuff to shape. Still need another sheet. Cut an offcut of consumer grade vinyl to size. Did it with scissors.
you can also see the MDF tabletop in the up and down position. I streaked the varnish on purpose because I hate MDF and it looks wood grain-ish.
Sorry about the poor photo quality and the host. Took the pics with my phone and part way through setting up a clean install on the computer so not a lot works yet.
