I am anticipating some fine carne adovada from Chili Works for lunch... but I digress...
Back on topic:
I am in the same situation with my 1978 DC, with the added complexity of right hand drive. The bus is currently under the knife (or torch, as it were) in Colorado, getting metal sections replaced. My metal guy knows a lot about double cabs (he owns one) and metal work (he's worked on double cabs and other bay windows buses a good bit), and knows where to find metal.
One source we used was a complete 1977 transporter that donated a nose, a rear skirt (valence, or whatever -- basically the whole rear lower part), and the entire rear wheel wells. Some of these parts, like the complete wheel wells, are simply not available except off an existing bus. Don't worry, everyone - this donor was not a bus that would ever be a candidate for restoration (sadly, but also happily).
Other parts he will have to source from places like KlassicFab or Schofield. These will be rocker panels, mostly. I am counting on his knowing what fits best where, based on his previous experience. He also knows what split bus parts will work.
In some cases, like the sill for the crew cab door, he will probably have to fab up something.
I do not think that a One Stop Shop for all this exists. Unless you take it to someone like this who knows what he is doing.
You might also try Bustoration and see what they have to say.
Now, back to lunch... mmm, those tender chunks of pork simmered all day in that hot red chile... _________________ John

well....
this is certainly an interesting approach at attempting to get help from people on this forum.
you might try to get in touch directly with Gerson. Thats the guy that makes all those "funky green panels". Best way to do that is to email him
try: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?username=Gerson
maybe you could click on any one of his ads and send him an email.
best of luck...let us know how things work out for you. |

Well, I certainly did not intend to put you off. I intended to be helpful. It does not matter that I am not doing my own welding (lacking skills and equipment), the answer is the same. I'm not sure what you expected.
To answer your question more directly, there is no one stop shop, and likely sources for panels would be KlassicFab (e.g. through Bustoration), Schofield (e.g., through VW Heritage or Just Kampers), or metal from a donor bus.
And the whole lunch thing was for a laugh. Ease up. _________________ John

Hey, take it easy on the people that post on here. They may not have the answer you are looking for this time, but I'm sure you will have more than one question. And we all know how many double and single cab folks that are around and have experience with them.

I'm a bit ticked that I wasn't invited. I love spicy South Western food. Not the tourist hot stuff.
To the OP, KF has 3, that's three, phone #'s on the website. I almost never have a problem reaching Gerson.
Now to heat up my homemade Carolina BBQ leftovers from the 4th. _________________ '69 SC under resto

not at all was i ticked off an any way ... i have been looking when i can for parts and was hoping someone could give me answers on the metal parts ..like"hey there is this shop who has " ... or "hey i got some stuff" did not mean to upset anyone...when you read on the forums people go on about stuff that has no answers to any one questions..yes i have contacted all the normal bus parts house.. but if you check the add nothing is in stock ...Monkey Nut is the only one i found that has stuff in stock ready to ship.for the bay DC...and thanks for the info that split stuff does fit ..i have alot of left overs from previous split bus builds but didnt want to waste them on something that would not work out in the end....now that i know the split DC stuff will work i can go from there.. there is alot of that stuff out there...thanks again... _________________ Trades welcome for any air cooled parts |

Most split stuff sort of fits, it still requires the reshapng of a seam here or a lip there, don't expect it to fit first try.
Like all those seams on the LH rocker for example, splits lack those.
There is no one stop shop for what you need, Gerson is the place to start but do expect to have to modify a few splitty parts. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Like busdaddy was saying, you can do pretty much all of the rockers on a bay D/C with Split metal. Some of it will need slight modifications but nothing you shouldn't be able to handle if you're already replacing body panels. Here's a truck I did and used all Gerson split bus stuff to do the rockers
Loading rocker is the same as split bus. For the cargo floor I used a donor piece out of a bus for part of it and made the outer, truck specific part.

Hope this helps |

Nice work!, that outer cargo floor is the #1 PITA for me when fixing rust on bays it's usually crispy on one side or the other, that slider track profile and the corresponding raised area on the rockers underneath just can't be duplicated with off the shelf splitty parts properly and look 100% right.
I hope Gerson is listening..... outer floor patch panels...outer floor patch panels...outer floor patch panels _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

The lower B pillars on my '69 SC are shot. We compared them with my freinds '65 SC and they appear and measure the same. I'll be getting a pair of them from Gerson. _________________ '69 SC under resto
