There is probably already a topic on this but i didn't see one, was wondering if you could post a picture of your trailer hitch on your bay and what mounting system/brand you used.
Thanks |

A couple of things to consider.....
Is this a 79 Federal or 79CA model?
Stock muffler?
How solid is the bumper mounted?
Is your goal here to use a receiver hitch or a ball hitch?
What are you planning on using it for? Trailer, bikes, or what? |

| i has a stock exhaust, i hope to use it for a bike hitch mount possibly a small trailer, it would be a receiver i guess, the bumper is solid but i don't think i would be mounting it to the bumper if thats what you were implying? ill have to check but i think it may be a CA model, im new to vw buses just bought it a few months back. |

I was lucky that mine came with a nice frame mount hitch. I took it off due to weight and not needing to haul a trailer. I'll try and get a pic of it. _________________ 1978 2.0L FI Campmobile |

Had to drill a couple of holes underneath into the bumper but I add a piece of 1/4 scrap to add some rigidity. the front of the hitch underneath has a u bolt that goes around the moustache bar.

I plan to put a receiver hitch on my 78 bus for my Yakima Big Horn 4 bike rack. But I worry about towing any real weight like in my 4x8 trailer. It seems like the little four cylinder engine is working hard enough to haul me, my wife and the dog, especially on the big hills and mountains we have here in Wyoming. I'm thinking overheating and blown engine. _________________ If you only have one tool in your tool box, and it's a hammer, pretty soon, everything looks like it needs to be whacked!

Not necessarily true. A "proper" running stock engine will pull a 4x8 all day long with no problem. I had one for a decade behind my '79 Auto Westy and hauled it probably 25K miles. I ran a CHT gauge and kept my speeds reasonable and NEVER had a problem. Never overheated the entire time I owned that van and the engine was in perfect running condition when sold.
I even pulled a few buses with that bus too.... _________________ Collie

There is a guy in Canada that makes late bay hitches for front and rear. His name is Jamie Rivers I believe. I have his front hitch installed on our 78 for our Saris Thelma 2 bike carrier and it fit perfectly and works great. We are going to add a rear hitch eventually as well.
Sorry for the double post. I see someone above posted the link to his site. |

If you are thinking of just a bike rack, you might want to consider putting one up front. The PO had this custom rack built. We use it from time to time. I am not really sure how it was attached since it goes way up into the nose somewhere. It not only locks onto the receiver, but has a locking mechanism for the bikes too. I like that it leaves the back hatch accessible and I can keep an eye on the bikes while driving. I can usually position the bikes so the headlights shine through the spokes. The only thing I don't like about it that when people see the receiver, they think I tow the bus around from place to place.

Westfalia Type 321 125 hitch - towing up to 1800 kg (4000 lb).

(unmounted at restoration)
What size ball is mounted on the Westy hitches? I assume it's fair to say that you can not change the ball size on a Westy hitch.
