My question is. With engine running i can pull 1 and 2 plug wires off and rpms drop about maybe 20 to 30 rpm pull number 3 or 4 plug wire by themself and motor wants to die. Have cleaned both carbs run compression test 100 psi per cylinder changed dis, new plugs. 1776 engine. Checked exhaust tempature drivers side runs 100 degrees hotter then pass side. Some black smoke out of drivers side. Thanks Question Confused

random thought, are the carbs jetted the same on each side? my money is on plug wires though. how did the plugs look when you changed them?

Sounds like the carbs are out of sync. Or burnt valves on the 1-2 side. The 3-4 side is doing all the work at idle - and probably at speed as well.

good tune up,make sure there isant any vac leeks, resync the carbs& go from there.might also need carb rebuild or cleanout, or just idle jet circuts cleaned.

Put new plugs in old ones real black. 44 webers bought brand new. Motor has about 500 miles on it. If valves were burnt would compression be different between cylinders. Even if valves were bent the compression would be different from one cylinder to the other. Took carbs and cleaned them out good. Could the dis be bad or week coil. Thanks

either the carb is not right or your plug wires are on wrong

IMO "new' means "untested", so I immediately suspect the carb

What method did you use to set both sides equal?

Plugs real black, probably fuel fouled, could certainly be casuse of skip would be a good idea to ck fuel pressure, may be over fueling also ck compression if its good probably carb and or induction problem

Thanks for all the help. I talked to Ron at Gently imports in Ok city he said compression was not enough valves may not be seated good or bent I will run another compression test with carb at open throttle. Then do a leak test to see how bad it is. Thanks everyone

squrit some oil in low reading cylinders if over fueling could have washed down cyl and lost ring seal, if so compression will come up with the added oil but it won't change if burned or bent valves

hey man what part of ok you in? im down near the pott. county - lincoln county area. new to the area and would love to get to know more vw pepole. did you go to the show in yukon?

more on topic i would think if the valves were bent or burnt you would see different compression readings. unless they all are fryed, but then it would act the same regaurdless of what wire you pulled. just thinking out loud and trying to help.
