They're the same for all Taiyo VWs and certain Bandai VWs. There were reproductions avaiable about 10 years ago, but I wouldn't know where to get them today. (I have some stashed for future projects.) Keep watching for cheap Taiyo parts cars and you can collect a set.
This model is considered an unofficial Herbie. Yes, it obviously is Herbie, but was not sanctioned by Disney, and had reversed racing stripes. (The red and blue are backward.) It is, however, considered an essential piece in a good Herbie toy collection and dates back to time of the original films.

One has good paint but one side and the bottom need a dent/wave bumped out and the friction drive needs work.
The other has more "patina" but the friction drive works.
Are these worth anything? If so how much? |
This particular version is the most common. They're desirable in any condition, and condition adds to value. I'd value them around $50 for the patina bus and up to $200 for the nice one. |

An Off Creme White CIJ (France) Oval Window with Grey Plastic Wheels ca.1958.
This color is a nice Creme White and is the "updated" metal diecasting (the second version) with the "Round Taillights" and the "Flat Pope's Nose" area of the license plate.......
But, as colors go the White CIJ Oval's are Very Rare no matter what version they are.
This toy has all original base paint, but I think the seller tried to enhance the silver paint around the license plate light.
I cleaned most of that non-original paint off and the toy is now almost as nice it was when it was originally sold, it is in good condition ~ Grade 6/6.5 from a Mint Boxed 10 with some play marks and mostly loss of the silver accent spray paint around the headlights and the bumpers.
Here's a comparsion of my (2) two White CIJ Oval Toys, the Toy with the Red Plastic Wheels is ca. 1956 and is more of a brighter Grey White color and the other is an Off Creme White almost eggshell colored one.
There was one more Toy that went into production in that same color, but with Chrome Metal Wheels and White Tires ca. 1959/60 and was one of the last of the Toys in the series. (I'm still looking for one of them)
Enjoy!

Tonight I cleaned off most of the non-original silver paint from around the license plate light on the back of the toy. ~ I used ultra mini cans of Easy Off Oven Cleaner - Just Kidding!
I removed most of the brushed on silver model paint, but any more rubbing there and the original paint would come off also......
Now it's a mini version of a "original patina" Oval Window.

I'm not familiar enough to know if this is worth enough to anyone that they'd want it, or not. If so, PM me and I'll provide details.

I suggest this book, The Beetle in Miniature. It shows nearly every old split and oval model produced.

Blue Baron suggested this book to me a few years ago and I finally got a copy last Christmas. I highly recommend it as well. _________________ 1963 Beetle

Awesome score, Ray! Those are tougher to find than the sedans. I scored the same model as part of the massive Canadian toy haul last summer. (Mine wqsn't damaged, just very dirty.) Parts from one of the reproduction Wiking 1/40 convertibles can be used to replace the steering wheel, seats, top and windshied (broken vent wing), but a chassis from on older model (sedan or convertible) will have to be sourced for the bumper.
Speaking of bumper, I have a bumper crop of stuff I'm selling. |

A cool WIKING Cabrio with potential
I picked up this MÄRKLIN KdF Wagen a while back for a couple of bucks as well.
I think the shipping was more than the MÄRKLIN itself.
It is only the body which is broken in the front.
The body is in great shape with no other fatigue cracks and guessing it must have been dropped to break that way
I had it cleaned and ready to be glued back together, a little body work and then painted.
I will have to build a chassis for it as the MÄRKLIN KdFs have an elongated body, about 1/37 scale and none of the 1/40th scale chassis would be a match.
Any other suggestions

You'll either have to fabricate a chassis or find a close-enough donor.
I'd think the more difficult job will be finding accurate looking wheels. |

Lookie Lookie what came in the mail today from France......... YAY!!!!
A very Near Mint Condition "First Edition" CIJ/ France (Compagnie industrielle du jouet = "Manufacturing Company of toys")
Oval Window Volkswagen Toy in Medium Brown.
This toy is one of the very first versions of the Oval Window Toy from this company, who released it sometime in late 1953, early 1954 and the first color to feature the Red wheel hubs.
(earliest versions of this toy had Yellow wheel hubs.)
The toy is Medium Brown in color, but the factory and modern collectors call the color Maroon.
(the box is not the original, but a very faithful modern Reproduction a friend of mine is making in France, next time I take some pictures I will compare the original box to the reproduction online).
This color in the "First Edition" is very hard to find in this condition.
Last year the Norev company made a modern re-issue tribute/ replica of the Maroon colored toy, but the molds and baseplate are made differently so the toy cannot be sold as an original version, the color and presentation of the toy is very faithful to the original as well as an original styled looking box - for comparison see below:
I really love the cartoon look of these toys ~ I think I have like 20 of these now and like 12 to 14 different versions, only two colors remain elusive from my collection, both which are in the 1956 to 1958 production era runs - a very light/ candy apple green with red wheel hubs/white rubber tires
and the bright red with the grey or chrome wheel hubs/white rubber tires.
Both those toys I'm looking for have the round taillights.
If anyone out there in Vintage VW toyland happens to have one of those two toys for sale or trade please drop me a note.
I pretty much have decided to keep on collecting just these CIJ's over all other vintage Oval Window toys, while I like their looks best and that I almost have the entire production run save two colors and maybe 8 more toys if I want to count versions and wheel colors as well..........
Enjoy!

Yes, Grey with the Blue wheels is one of the early versions ca. 1956 from Dinky Toys Meccano Ltd. Liverpool, England.

| Yup. Later versions had spun aluminum wheel hubs instead of the cast ones. |
