I've come across a weird groove scored in the case as I'm tearing down my spare engine for a rebuild. When I bought my car I knew its engine was in bad shape so I swapped it out almost immediately for the engine from my last car, which had been wrecked in an accident. What this means is that I have no history or info on the engine that came with the car, other than that one head turned out to be cracked, and it was hemorrhaging oil from somewhere when we got it.

We're getting ready to crack the case appart and I noticed this very odd and what looks to me to be accidental groove cut into the driver's side case half. What I'm wondering is

A) Anyone know where this came from or what purpose (if any) it may have served? It sure looks accidental to me.

B) does this look like a deal breaker for this case to you? I've never done an engine rebuild, but the engine currently in my car has developed a main bearing knock (at least that's what it sure seems like) so I need to decide soon if I'm going ahead on this rebuild or budgeting for a new engine.

Thanks folks, and there are pictures below

Looks like part of the engine shroud was rubbing against it for quite awhile

Interesting, that hadn't occurred to me. Do you think the damage is significant enough to make rebuilding with this case a bad idea?

looks like someone got a little carried away with a die grinder and whatever was being cut was in front of that area

If you layed the 1 & 3 Cyl. tin there, you will see that it lines up with the groove. Case should be fine. when you put the tin back on, make sure and trim a litttle bit with snips

Tin wear caused it,its not a stress crack...that often occurs on the other side of the case,by #3 cylinder

Id fill it with epoxy to provide some stability and roll it...the case/transaxle flange has a ridge that supports it so that slice shouldnt be an issue.
