Well, it found me. I guess I haved developed a bit of a rep for these cars (the only person anyone knows who is even interested in them past their engines) and a guy contacted me about this bad boy. Very rough which is no real surprise in this part of the country but I'm going to go pick it up in early July! Can't wait, it has some fun stuff on it and will increase my parts supply for these cars. Great vintage VW roof rack, gas heater and the windsheild is perfect! No cracks! That is what helped seal the deal.

Those are nice roof racks. Mine is actually 4" narrower at the rear to match the Type 3 square roof taper. Yours doesn't look to have that much taper.

I really like them. This one is installed in a more forward position than on my '73 412.
It seems to be in the same position as this one in the accessories brochure.
The brochure states that it's the same rack for the Type 3 and Type 4. Wonder why your's has a taper?

| Boy...that one is in sad shape...rust wise. It also has the trunk mounted auxiliary heater and seem fairly complete. looks almost like some of the ones in the woods on the West side of Tulsa off the turnpike. Ray |

Yes, there is no going back for this one, althought I'm told it's one of those "ran when parked" cars. Either way, I'm viewing it as a parts car and nothing more. It's much worse body-wise than the 411 I picked up about the same time last year and it's in pretty bad shape.

Sadly those were not part of the sale. It's OK, it's not like I don't have 10 of the damn things. At least the newest aquisition has an auto transmission. My 2 other parts cars are 4 speeds, while the good 412 is an auto.
When I go to do the pick up, I'm interested to see what vintage the cheesewagon in the background is.

Well, after an epic adventure over 2 days, the car is back "home" loaded to the gunnels with piles of other parts and things. Some trash, some interesting etc. Going to sort through things and see what is all there. It came with the keys and even the key to the glove box lock. That is going in the 412 right away. Rusty as hell and as I told another Samba member, looking in the rear view mirrors of the truck coming home, the fenders were flapping in the wind like a basset hound's ears at full gallop. Car was originally from Ontario so that explains the rust. See the pictures of the inner left in the trunk. It's a hodge podge of fibreglass and bondo. I don't know if this was rust "repair" or really crappy "repairs" from the car being hit. Roof rack is coming off and it's going up for sale along with a bunch of other stuff. I found a standard trans pedal assembly in the trunk.

I've been asked to post a few pictures of the gas heater in detail. Here they are.

I like the 3 spoke steering wheel! I wonder if it would fit on a Type 3? _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

All years IV rear brakes are the same as 4-lug III except for the center hub.
Electric heater booster fan can be adapted to `72-up buses or grafted into Beetles/etc.
CV joints are the same as Thing, have more travel than I/III or II and are therefore in demand for increased-travel off-road applications. |
Yes...to add to that....as marc noted the late type 3 fronts are the same as the EARLY type 4...so 71-72 type 3 fits 68 to august of 1972 type 4. The same early rotors calipers and backing plates fit Porsche 914 to August of 1972. The September 73 and on type 4 fits 73 and on 914.
Inside of the car....the steering wheel, steering wheel cover, ingnition lock, lever assemblies and washer/blinker mechanism are the same as late super and late type 3. Late type 4 seat belt assemblies (1972 on) also fit 71-72 type 3 and some late supers.
I believe outer tie rod ends are the same as one part # of type 3 and the inner bent tie rod ends from either a type 3 or beetle will fit type 4.
The speedo and clock were used in late ghias...but it is a typ 4 number. the steering idler bracket will bolt into a super with some clearance. the idler arm bushing is the same super to 412.
The switches...headlight, emergency flasher and defroster will in fact fit in other vehicles (ghis type 1 and type 3)....but no others will fit into the type 4. In fact its a waste to put type 4 switches into type 1 based vehicles because....ther are plenty of switches for those and sofew for type 4. The snouts of the switches are longer on type 4. ther are now enough type 4 owners out there that will eventually need these switches that you should be able to sell them npo problem.
E-brake lever fits type 3 along with boot. there are other smaller details as i think of them. Ray |
Everything will eventually be going. I plan to post those steering wheels in the classifieds soon. _________________ '73 Super Beetle w/ all the Sport Bug extras

So I have started to remove the gas heater from this car and it's more of a job than expected. I thought that the heater was a dealer add on option. Turns out it isn't. It seems like a factory ordered one. All the inlets/outlets through the body and firewall are factory punched and painted along with the same for wiring. I have the heater removed but am stuck trying to get the wiring out from under the dash and removing the dash switch. I ran out of time but when I am back out there I will take pics of the trunk and post it up. The heater is held by 3 points welded and painted in the trunk. _________________ '73 Super Beetle w/ all the Sport Bug extras
