A friend of mine has a few Citroen 2CVs that he imported from Europe, I was driving one and I can't believe all the "Is that a really old Volkswagen?" comments. Ugh. Beetles are so much better looking.

I love the 2CV because it's ugly. I love the Beetle because it's the most attractive car ever made.

Passenger in the back seat:

"I've never been in a car this close to the ground before." (mine isn't lowered either, save for 42 years of being on the road).

I was at the gas station pumping gas. Had some young girl (early 20's) jump out of another car and ask me if my bus was for sale. I replied that there was no way I would sell my bus.

Girl starts to turn away, and then stops and yells out to me that she would make it worth my while if I sold her my bus.

My girlfriend was in the front seat and started to yell out the window at this girl to get the hell out of here. And to make matters even better, my girlfriend paid extra attention to me the next couple of days. Very Happy

I love my bus!!!!!

I was stuck as the first car at a stoplight and a woman with a kid were in the crosswalk. She was having the darndest time with him, he wasn't paying attention to her and kept turning around to look at my 89 Westy and asking her kid-questions about it. He was so young and I couldn't really understand him, he was at that own-language-age. She finally got him across the intersection and he is just staring at "the camper" (I got that much) and she says to him,

Quote:
"Yes, I want one too!"

At that I broke into a big smile and gave them both the peace sign out the window. His eyes got real big and I got another shot of hope for the next generation.

a year ago I stopped at a gas station at 6 in the morning. This was on the Atlantic city expressway so there had to be 16 pumps. Now here in Jersey, we dont pump our own. The attendant has to do it. I have the 65 squareback with the gas tank in the trunk so I pull up with the pump on the right side. I always get out to open the hood and usually take the pump from the gas jockey and pump my own, no problem. The attendant, who I'm going to assume comes from an eastern european country because of a heavy accent, tells me I'm not allowed any gas because my car is pointing in the wrong direction. I calmly said that since it's 6am and I'm the only car at a 16 pump station, it should be no problem. He said"no.no.no. The owner will find out and he will beat us for it." I couldnt top that so I just went somewhere else.

I was also filling my own at a station when the gas jockey came running from across the street yelling that I was breaking the law by pumping my own gas. I handed him my cell phone and told him the local police number.
He went away.

I was parked outside of a car show today with my '69 Bug and had a girl say "Wow, they didn't make very many of these!" so I said "Yeah, only 20 million or so..."

"Wow, so they made like more Chevy Berettas!"

...WHAT?

And the latest- having someone tell me my car wasn't a '69 "because they were different than that."

Right. Thanks. It's identical to the other 3 '69 Beetles I've owned.

At the grocery store the other day...
"I owned one just like it, it was a blue '77"
(meanwhile its a beige 57)

At the gas station guy asks me what year, I tell him its a 57.
"Are you sure, it looks just like my old 62?"
(no I am not sure I just wander through life spouting random facts)

Even though some of the comments are insane I still enjoy talking to folks about these cars. It makes you wonder what kind of comments the American Iron guys get. I guess you are either a car guy/girl or you aren't, and I think most of these cars were just beaters so folks didn't pay attention to the details.

Had a guy get out of a 90s pos pickup and ask me what year. I told him 63. He sighed, rolled his eyes, and told me "well drive carefully because I'm sure you have no idea what that's worth."
riiight. Thought about showing him my last few months bills. Rolling Eyes

Then you need to paint some flames on it. Maybe some shark teeth on the front bumper? TruckNutz on the back? I don't know... just a thought.

A guy at the office claimed he used to drive a '47 in the fifties. But it wasn't like any other beetle, no parts fit between the two. Oh, was it a Kübel I asked and described the Kübelwagon. No no, he said, it looked like a beetle, only different.

Hm. One of life's mysteries.

Met my friend and his girlfriend at a bar one night. We met in the parking lot so my engine was hot and his girlfriend said

"Your car smells like the old car ride at Hershey Park"

Recently finished a 20 month ground up rebuild on my 64 Beetle. Red paint with copper pearl, polished 5 spokes, custom Sewfine interior, etc.
I am getting gas next to a traveler that just pulled off the interstate.
He looked at my car and said "That is in really good shape!" "Thanks" I tell him.
A couple of minutes go by, and he says "I can't believe how well all of those old parts have held up!"
I just smiled.
