What a sweet beetle.. Too bad someone had to hack it! What do you think this bug is worth?? Is it easier just to sell the whole roller or peel her top off and do it like that?

With what some madman did to the dash, rust in the lower quarters... the wrong front clip or a funky gas door mod.. I would personally consider it a sunroof clip now.

If the clip's not worth a whole lot I might just save it for my own graft.. What do you guys think its worth.. All I see on the samba is 3 fold clips.

If it has never been hit in the front, that front clip (even with the butchered gas door) would make someone pretty happy. I need front quarters myself and am fairly local (portland).

Too bad its not closer, Im looking for a baja project.

The last 2 fold sunroof hole I purchased without mechanism was $75. If its the clip with the welded nuts on the inside you may get a bit more to the right buyer.

It would be a project for sure but way more than I want to take on right now.. Id sell it if the price was right or Ill keep it around. The clip is solid! I know Id be kicking myself if I score some beat up oval and I let the ragtop go cheap.

Its 2 types of ragtops on the 56 modell from 55, first from 4.august 1955, and then a modified type in november 55. The final modification came in may 56 and lasted to 63 (67 on standards). When is your car produced (check by VINno.)?

For the right person your clip can be the needle in the hay.

I'd hold onto it...find yourself a dash clip, a rear clip, learn some metal fab, get her back as she used to be! If you have the room to store it, fix her up a little at a time. I've so many cars in hella-worse shape brought back to life. Search these forums and you'll see what I mean (check out the work on this guy's notchback. Talk about inspiring work! http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=240540 )

It should have a 2 fold, since "late 55" is the '56 Model Year d'oh!

I'd totally cut that sucker up and part it out... not even worth the inordinate amount of time and $$$ needed to get back on the road IMO.

I agree. What really makes up my mind is someone cut right through the vin.. So all I see are the first few numbers and the last one.. No title possible. the top, oval, firewall, and front beam are coming off and set aside for my next oval find.

Where would someone recommend slicing this old beetle for the roof?

First I would cut the rag section out and sell off the piece like this.. if you have all of the mechs intact along with it you can get a decent buck back provided you don't treat it as a pile of gold bricks. But What you need to know is that is a later '56 which is the standard at the end of the '56 only changes that went all the way to '67 (it has four round corners, you can see it in the patina)

after that, offer up whats left! Those that are smart know what they want & will show you where to cut as many people are looking for roof & rod tidbits for odd jobs...

I look at it this way, I paid $300 for my rag donor.

After I snagged the rag section. With what was left after? Sold off quarter sections, the doors, door parts, oval & vent section, switches, looms, coat hooks, straps and anything else that I could stuff into a small box... Hell I even had an awesome guy contact me all the way from Ruperto-rico that bought up the rotten rear parcel tray & all of the bashed channels sectioned up as he asked to be sectioned.

In the end, I made 3X what I gave for it in parts only over a 6 month period.

What was left? ..another $100 from the scrapyard...
