Hi folks.

Just bought these wheels & had em installed on my 71 Super.

http://www.kustom1warehouse.net/2_liter_alloy_wheels_for_VW_Volkswagen_Bug_p/2literalloyempi.htm

Wheels are 15", 5.5" wide. Tires are P185/65R15. Suspension is stock.

Good news is I love the looks of the wheels!

Bad news is the front wheels don't fit.

There is less than 1/4 inch space between bottom of strut and the inside of the wheel when the wheels are straight ahead. On any medium-tight turn either direction, there is noticeable rubbing that I can hear and feel. (Parking is one situation where rubbing happens guaranteed.)

It looks to me like the bottom of the strut is hitting the edge of the wheel. Also, not obvious from the pics, but the bottom spring perch is rubbing very slightly against the tire.

Pics are of the right wheel, but left looks identical.

Any suggestions about how to fix this? My first thought is some spacers -- CIP1 sells 1/4 inch and 3/8 inches -- with longer studs. But, longer term, I am planning to install Topline SuperLow kit -- just to get the stance better. Will that resolve the problem?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Spacers are fine with longer lug bolts to get you back on the road with your new wheels.

Thanks Mike, appreciate it. For now since I am gonna lower the car anyway -- I ordered the Topline Super Low kit today & will install ASAP. We'll assess how things fit after that.

If you are going super low the 185's won't fit without a narrowed beam? I am only down 1 inner spline on all 4 corners with 185X60 and 205X70 barely fit on my square. I'm only 3.5" to my beam!

You are 2nd person to say that...when I ordered Topline stuff, John at Topline said that 185s might be too wide.

I am not gonna go for extreme low, probably a couple of inches. Super Low kit may be overkill.

The tires are not super expensive but they are new & it will be a bummer to have to change em out if they do not fit when everything's together.

I think I went at this backwards...shoulda lowered first, then got the wheels & tires.

It is a learning experience...at a price!

You may have to grind off the portion of the ball joint stud that sticks out beyond the nut.

Thx man. Yup, that is what John at Topline said, too. I ordered new struts from Topline, John said that grinding may be needed after installing them. Looking at the studs -- there is plenty to grind, so I don't think it will hurt.

I had the same problem with my 71. Trimmed off the end of the ball joint stud and now all is well. Been running like this over two years with no problem.
