what do you think?
car always been rough to start, even after refurbished starter...new ground wire and hot wire on battery.....battery is a few months old and read 13.5v at rest
started car last week and ran it for 15-20 to try and recreate oil leaks, pulled back in garage and shut off
just removed dash panel and replace all fuses to start fresh....headlights, hazards, turn signals all work better after replacement
only problem now is, engine wont even start.....when key is turned, i hear one click in back right (assuming it's starter) and that's it
there's no way to short out starter by checking charge on battery? isthere? just touched sensors to respective battery poles and got reading
what in the world?? |

im not familiar with it, i think ive found the wire/plugs in my battery area......but wasnt sure how to use them so i wrapped them in plastic to keep moisture from being introduced at any point
if there's something i need to attach to those plugs, to obtain a reading, i definitely dont have it |

Yea sorry about that. Wanted to confirm my data before posting it.
The wires in the battery area which should be;
Brown
Brown/White
Red/Yellow
are part of the defunct diagnostic system. They don't need to be hooked up to anything. Used to hook up to a special VW battery no longer available.
Anyway,....I was trying to figure out which pins to short together to activate the solenoid. _________________ 74 VW Thing - Walküre

| What happens if you jump between the male spade(s) on your solenoid and the big lug with the cables on it. That should make your starter engage, so don't run yourself over. |

| If the headlights are getting dimmer while the engine is revved up you aren't getting output from your generator/alternator. Which one do you have by the way the stock generator or an alternator? |

When my wiring system goes south, I'm going to cut out every inch of the factory wiring and rewire the entire vehicle myself to my specifications....engine/charging system, lights, turn signals and instrument lighting....keeping it very simple and using modern mini fuses in a convenient panel under the boot lid ( front)....ignition key switch and push button starter..should take about a weekend. |

Sounds like you may have more than 1 problem... first, you need to have a strong battery. Have it tested and/or buy a new one. Then check your connections... ground cable and starter cable... both ends...clean & tight. Now get in and turn on your lights...hit the starter. If the lights go dim while the key is in the start position and you hear nothing or just a "click" from the rear of the car, I would suspect a bad starter/ solenoid if all the grounds are good. Good luck.

^HAAAAAAAA! you're so clever
it was indeed my battery (my issue), down to 3.5v at rest the next morning, took it in for replacement, and took it out driving |
