Hi,
Maybe a silly question but how do you clean your oil sumps as you cannot see the interior very well and that the casting flashes make good traps for debris.
I've had a damage on a rod bearing and found small chips on the strainer plate. I poured acetone in the sump, shook it well and after emptying the acetone I used the compressor to blow it.
I'm not sure this is the best method an although I have a full flow set-up that should catch contamination I'm reluctant to start the freshly rebuilt engine with this sump..
Thanks for your help,
Phil |

I clean sumps by submersing them in my solvent tank and blowing air into it while under the solvent. {Be very careful, solvent can be blown all over the place if you do not have it completely under}
I use an air blower with a long tube on it so it will reach all the way in. _________________ Dave Hopple Classic VW

You have the cases apart or together?
You must pull the bottom end completely apart to remove debris and flush/brush out the oil galleys.
Don't forget your cooler and hoses will be filled with metal also, I recommend you replace it. _________________ www.srpengines.com

I have rebuilt the whole engine, everything was taken appart and cleaned. Now the engine is back together and I'm just left with this sump issue.
I will replace the cooler and thoroughly clean the oil lines.
Sadly I don't have a part washer. |

| the actone works good, and you can add a few small peices of rage soaked & shake the crap out of it too. and I have also used the dish washer befor&after to be sure.and also you can get a syphen blow gun and use some laundry detergent, mixed with water, it cleans better than most other methods with about 10 psi.no mater what you use besure to have it clean befor you use it.the syphen blowgun is awassom for cleaning just about everything that gets nasty.kinda like steem cleaning with out all the heat¶faniala.and pressure washers can be hazzardus to the digets&hands |

When I rebuild any engine I always take the caes and sump to the car wash. Spend a $1.00 and leave the mess there. Don't forget to wear gogles and a rain coat. _________________ 2010 Sportsman ET Champion - Mid-America Dragway - Arkansas City, KS

A real oil filter will protect your bearings.

I used Castrol Super Clean. I sprayed it liberally inside of the sump, rolled it around in my hands to slosh it to all of the corners and let it sit. After about 20 minutes, I rinsed it thoroughly with the garden hose, then dried it with compressed air. Worked pretty well I think. _________________ '67 Sunroof

Yep that is what I would do, just be careful not to let it sit to long, the superclean will eat the aluminum for lunch.
Once you get it all clean throw it in the dishwasher (laying flat) for a hot wash cycle. _________________ www.srpengines.com

Might not matter since you already used the oven to do powder painting at home _________________ Glenn

Murzi, I'll stick to my used sump
I cleaned it yesterday. Used 1L of acetone and let it sit 30min on each side and then used compressed air to dry/blow it.
I just found one little tiny chip. The sump is now bone dry and ready to be fitted. |
