ive been buidling my baja for the past year or so and i always had a bad moldy smell since it was a stock beetle. i looked through the entire car and couldnt find anything until recently i thought it couldve been the carpet floor mats. sure enough it was. now me being cheap as i am i decided to try to make my own pair. not out of carpet though. it, being a baja i figured itll get muddy, and wet and rubber would be the easiest to pull out and spray off.
here she is
this is what i am using
just pulled out the carpet
dropped it on top there and traced it. notice my very technical weights
threw her in there and with a little trimming she fit pretty good!
cut a hole so the shifter could stick through and just zip tied it back up
what do you guys think? honestly, i dont care if you hate it lol _________________ 1968 VW Baja D.D.

hate is such a strong word. practical yes but maybe it is the color. moisture will get trapped under the rubber. i do like the ideal and tractor supply sells a rubber mat to put in livestock trailers that we have thought of using like duck board but just for the floorboards and not the tunnel. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy
sand it, fill it, paint it, throw some mud on it and then baja it. |

meh.
Aside from what pafree mentioned about trapping moisture it seems pretty cool. Easy to clean.
Some cheesehead put a thick rubber as flooring over diamond plate steel on my rail, it's all ate from having stuff trapped. But in your case it probably wouldn't be much worse than having rubber floor mats. _________________ "If you had a beer can in your hand the beer would have stopped it, alcohol is a natural force of good that keeps you from getting hurt, unless you're city people...." |

I pulled the carpet out of my baja too. I used the stuff that pafree is talking about. I replaced my floorpans so I dont have any tarboard. I cut the rubber horse stall matt to cover the floor area and then used some inexpensive automotive carpet on the tunnel. The mat looks good, is very durable, and cuts down on road noise. If you want I can post a picture of what it looks like.

home depot and lowes some really nice outdoor carpet now instead of the just the green astro turf looking stuff. we did a manx style project with it and it turned out good. i think the main thing is to have it where it comes out easy so things can dry. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

As far as looks... sorry bro but that is hideous. I also think you are going to rot your pan with that on. _________________ “It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.”
