Hello. I plan on purchasing all of my window rubber for my January '51 this week. Question, when (chassis #, or month) did they start putting the molding around the front windshield? My car is pre crotch cooler split, with no dome light switches in the door jams. Also what month did they add the wolfsburg crest to the hood, and the e brake boot? My car has og short hood trim with a crest on it, but I have heard some other discussion that the crest came later in the year. Any responses would be great.

Thanks
Josh

Your car should have the long trim with no crest. The crest was added in April 51. Also, I am quite sure you should not have any trim around your windshield. I posted the exact dates for this stuff on another thread here not to long ago. Try doing a search to find it.

Good luck.

Thanks Kevin. So what does the book say about the ebrake boot. I have heard numerous stories on the boot. . . . like they started using it then stopped using it and thne kept it in production from mid 51 on. Anyway just curious and would like to know.

Seems like you want to put your car back together as correct as possible. Good for you. Besides this web site, check out: http://www.kabriolett.com/stvw/index.htm The site is dedicated strictly to Pre March 53 Beetles. Great site for info.

Yeah I watch and post on that site as well. Alot of great info there. Although alot of times, it seams to me anyway, posts won't get answered there unless you are a "key player".

My car will not be 100% stock, there will be a few drive train modifications, a few items I personally like on it and the color will be a later '51 color I believe, chestnut brown. Although I enjoy the challenge of building a 100% stock car, I also enjoy adding a few personal tastes to it as well. You know as well as I that building a "correct" spilt can take alot of $$$, and that can be hard to come up with all at once.
Anyway when was the last time you saw a chop top, whale tale split on 4 lugs with the Mahuland look. Wink

The trim around your windshield did not start until October 52. The hood crest started in early 51. Your car should have a hood crest and no aluminum window trim

My 52 was built before Oct with crotch coolers and came with the original windshield moulding that looks like oval moulding but is held on with tiny clips inserted into the rubber.

P.S. I have had an all original 52 and an original 51 - both had the chrome trim.

I'm the guy that started that original thread. I have come to believe the chassis numbers-- the dates are too conflicting. There are too many examples of dates moving before and after on the chassis numbers. So, my April 10th car will get no windshield trim or crest, and will have the lever type shocks in the rear. My car # 243-486. ( Birth Certificate from VW reads Manufacture date April 10th.) My extensive searching has yielded this: Windshield trim added 244-668.Crest started 243-731. (very close....)Regular type shocks 244-003. Later style crotch cooler 276-126. I am trying to get numbers for the following but only can get dates. New type heater boxes April 6th and Door switches added April 13th. Skim and Kevin, when you look up the dates for the crotch coolers, I find it interesting that the Jan. number and the April number both end in 638. 221-638 and 241-638. A little trippy to say the least. My April car has the square indentations for the switches, but none. My Sept. car has them. I personally like the later '51 style ( and early '52's), the early'51's are like '50's to me. If you can come up with the chassis numbers for the door switches, swell! Rolling Eyes

I will try to find out tonight.
Its strange because I think I have a late double glovebox crotch cooler 52 because my car came with later crotch coolers, non lever shocks, ***no inspection hole over the transmission** but the horse hair pad under the luggage area carpet was pre cut for the inspection hole although the original carpet on top wasnt.

Skim, the no inspection hole thing is interesting. I think there were only a FEW pre-zwitters with these.

I thought the same thing because when I removed the original carpeting and padding, it was still original chestnut brown underneath with no signs of tampering. I was actually kinda dissapointed because i was looking forward to that square! Laughing

There are.

I'll look into the switchs when I get back into town. Progressive Refinements is THE BOOK. The data is correct. That said, it is the best book to use when figuring out these questions. If you depart from it, well, you're car is wrong.

I may have fat fingered the chassis numbers, so I'll have to double check when I get home.

Ah, yes, Progressive refinements. I shoulda looked better. Door switches: chassis # 241-638. Wow, there's that number again! I agree, though, it's the definitive word. There are some dicrepancies. Eg., Wolfsburg crest April 1 @243-731. Yet door switches say April 13th @241-638. I figure the chassis numbers are maybe more correct. Question

THE BOOK is not always correct. Transitional cars exist at each year change and the factory was not above using up any existing parts from the previous year. Early ovals had split semaphors and wire windshield wipers until the supply ran out. The book " A day at the Factory" (April '53) show all ovals with the above items. Yet THE BOOK says the change was made in March of '53. Actually '53 ovals did not get smooth semaphors until Sept of that year. Those are just two of the errors in Progressive Refinements. Skims' car is probably correct in spite of THE BOOK. Different countries also received different parts ie., cold climates and oil bath filters compared to desert countries. Austrialian cars rarely fit the norm.

I'll take the word of THE BOOK way before I take from "A day of the factory." Where did anybody mention anything that skims car was wrong Bob? I certainly didn't. I said there were splits without the inspection cover. I've owned one. I am not aware of us talking about any car other than a Wolfsburg car.

"A day at the Factory" is a photo book. It's proof is pretty cut and dry. I too have a copy of Progressive Refinements but I was Bob Koch who showed me all the problem with regard to Zwitters and that book. There are no rules with regard to the first several days following a model or year change. It tells things the way they should be but it's not always the case.

BTW....If I was to restore a car -----It would be with that book. Good restoration shops use THE BOOK to stay out of trouble. Wink
