So i asked Frank Ochoa. How is it that I saw you drive your bug everyday from about 1987 thru about 1989 with a 2276 and 48s in it all the way from Ontario to L.A to work everyday? He says "its got a 5-speed"... He added that in 1985 when he started building his bug he paid $1500 dollars which was alot of money back then to have the 5-speed built to his style of driving and that today as he is building a 67 convertible ghia, that same type of tranny he wants to put into the ghia they want $5000 and he says "now thats alot of money". I told him, "bro, you just dont know how fortunate you guys are to have put away 11 Volkswagens when you did"

I also asked Frank Ochoa; Why is it that you resisted for so long my invitation to see what we were doing and be part of it, and he said "because I knew it was going to light my fires"

This thread is working folks and now with "80s LA" on FB its providing additional means of reaching out, ask Alex Bad Temper2, ask VWKidd, ask Frank Ochoa, ask Steve Diaz, ask Danny Alvarado. These are just a few of the guys we looked up to in our respective neighborhoods. And they are BACK, and more coming....

Right on J8Bug but is that a good thing for todays hobby or a warning!! ; ) LOL!!

Its a good thing. The more the merrier, right ???

Ck out the link... 1000 views in a snap of a finger. Very few responses but Im being told by people that want to talk that they like seeing a side to the hobby that used to be a lifestyle re-emerge after 23 yrs of being non-existent in Los Angeles. We just needed to reach out and get fires re-lit that I knew were in us. Small ideas are taking-off now, take "80s L.A" (thx crg) for example, and im sure there will be others which will only help grow the hobby as a whole, I believe. I have a few ideas in my head that I want to implement into "80s L.A" that will be unique to our scene that people will love. There should be NO reason why we can't continue to make it work, it's worked so far and we are 2-1/2 yrs into the resurrection. I say, lets ride this wave into retirement. We are all just about there anyway...

I had never heard those terms (Resto-Cal, Resto-Custom, Resto- this and that) before either Eh?. On another 80s thread here on Samba, SKIM said it point blank recently "Whats known as Resto Custom now was definetly started in Los Angeles in the early to mid 1980's"... My personal opinion on that. When it comes to art, Ill take the word from the streets anyday over the stuff the old guy behind the desk is trying to feed us, period Exclamation .. The word on my streets from the guys that were putting the style together in the early 80s was "CalStyle"...

Skims own words. (About halfway down the page.) I dont know who is going to dispute that, The guy knows his STUFF!!!

So I have another bit of info from 80s LA VW scene. So now that our Facebook 80's LA group & this thread are starting to create a buzz and the words getting out to all the vw kids from the 80s I'm getting emails & getting back in touch with fella's I have not talked to since then. Well I was talking to some of my boys from Hunt. Park that were in the VW/Party scene and one of them reminded me of our friend Cuban Lionel and his pink & white microbus that was at all the LA cruise spots back in the day and was always full of cha-cha party chicks! Well we were talking and I asked my homie if he remembered if Lionel ever rolled his VW with a vice-grip holding the steering wheel (I asked because I remember Carlos CRG telling a story about seeing a pink & white micro with a bunch of heads in it and he looked in and saw the steering wheel held on by vise-grips) Well what do you know my homie started to laugh because he remembered Lionel would like to take off his steering wheel off whenever he parked it anywhere to slow down anyone that wanted to "pop" it, So I'm thinking and my buddy is thinking it had to be Cuban Lionel's Pink/white microbus that Carlos CRG saw that night........

Unique to our Latino Neighborhoods in LA were the Logo VDubs......

In Latino neighborhoods of Los Angeles in the mid 1980’s at a time when every teenager owned or dreamed to own a Volkswagen there was a trend among the cruisers, racers & cal-style Volkswagens of having brightly colored VW’s that were themed with detailed logos and scripts. Los Angeles, & Hollywood being the media capital of the world, it was only fitting that we would be influenced by the studios cartoon & movie characters by having detailed script and images painted on the sides & deck lids of VW’s built during this period, we like to call the 80’s LA Logo era. The first VW that I remember seeing in LA with writing on the side not on a full drag strip VW was a street racer called Lil Dreamer soon after there was logo’d VW’s called Baboom, Ragberry, Pink Panther, Bad Temper, Bad Temper II, Radical Rag, Suicide Solution, Gumby themed, The Blockheads themed, Marvin the Martian, a Ratfink Rat themed, and a Casper the ghost themed were just a few of the Logo’d VW’s I remember cruising and racing in the streets everywhere in LA during this period. The Logo’d cars usually would have the name of the LA neighborhood they were from lettered somewhere usually on the fenders and the majority of them were Logo'd by Danny A. Designs

A mini time line Logo'd VW's

Man!! I'm starting to think the early Hot Rodders of LA had Von Dutch & LA 80's Latino VW's had Danny A.!! His Logo's were on some of the Best VDubs in the 80's.[/quote]

RagBerry and King rag were so cool remember them well!

This bus was called "Wet dream" If you went to the old Coors Beer sponsored VW Jamboree in the OC you would have seen it in person. Back then a bus like that was crazy to see so fixed up.This was Linda Sobek, A mod le who was murdered by her photographer and was once a Raiderette.

Badest bus to hit the show scene back then! Linda was from Lakewood , Ca and was a good frind of mine we went out a few times. I Remember attending her funeral she was a great girl with a big life ahead of her RIP LINDA

Very cool to see all the history being posted in here. Here's one of the cars I owned for a short time in the mid 80's cruising Lincoln Heights. Bought it from the guy who built it, it got stolen from him and I bought it from him after he got it back after it was recovered. They took the wheels, motor, trans, Louvered hood, seats and roll bar. I Got it running, slapped porsche alloys back on it, put a primered hood on it stock seats. Sold it in 87' went to Japan. Sad

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen. What's up Paul, I member Ragberry cruising around Lincoln in the mid 80's, I always tripped out how he had 15 inch porsche alloys in front & 14 inchers in the back. Hey do you guys member the dark green oval rag that had a name (logo) painted on the side? I think it parked at the same house Ragberryy parked at in East Los.

Mauricio I sold some of my VW's to Japan too & I regret it now, but when someone tells a kid they will give you a wad of cash for your VW....that was like the most money I had ever had at one time back then it clouded my judgment.....The Japanese economy was boomimg & they were buying everything in LA in the 80's......Low Riders, VW's, real estate....sometimes I think maybe I should go to Japan since thier economy is hurting now and find my VW's and bring them back home........I wonder if they keeped Ragberry like it was????

They were quick to paint alot of stuff that went there so who knows? They tried to give me $20K for my 1984 S10 Blazer when it came out of the paint shop when I had it at my first show but I turned them down. I wish I had took it later...LOL

Who remembers the Vw car lot Bugs For You in the 80's? I think it was in Azusa ,Ca. and they had some super clean vw's on that lot. I think they ended up closing cause to many cars were getting stolen off the lot.

I think you are referring to Car Custom. They had a used car lot. Bugs For You was in Orange next door to FAT Performance

That ^^ is GREAT STUFF!!! Thanks for posting it on this thread. That verifies much of what we have been talking about thruout this thread and it ended up being in a mid-80s Lowrider issue, go figure. Somewhere on this thread I posted that if anyone was coming into L.A, they were coming to document lowrider culture whether it was magazines or filmmakers . I guess they were coming in and also noticing something else other than lowriders (which were dying out). They were noticing all the baddass CalStyle Vdubs and mini-trucks or as they say "the style of the new generation"....

I had been curious and Ive asked a few GFK guys, if they knew who were the guys I used to always see in the mid-80s around the SGV. I had vivid memories of some mid-80s GermanFolks cars that I always thought were very Nice!!! When I got back into VWs in 96 after 5 yrs away I remember soon after seeing some GFK cars featured here and there and saying to myself, "Oh, I remember them" but I didnt recognize the faces. Besides the unfamiliar faces though there was another significant difference, the cars were no longer just nice, now they were Incredible!!!. You guys heve never dissapointed thats for sure..

But the raza has taken the nu look to the automobile. With the transition your traditional lowrider has now been joined by the nu-style of Volkswagen Lo's....
DJ Nacho from Foreign Fantasy provided this photo for a visual of the transition. There's his lowrider with a for-sale sign and a 60 ragtop waiting in the wings. Foreign Fantasy goes back to 1982 so this photo is an authentic early-mid 80s photo...

LMAO,,, You can't even pronounce it right. Its Resto-Cal or Resto-Custom and in some cases ive even seen Cal-Resto. I was talking to Frank Ochoa earlier today cause i got word his red rhd vert was on the cover of SuperVws in the late 80s. He confirmed it and said that he's getting that same car road worthy and said "Im planning on making some changes but its still gonna be CalStyle". Every generation has a lingo that they identify with, so atleast now Ill be able to have conversations with people that are coming back and not feel so old or worse yet, a martian.

Hahahaha!! That's what I mean, I never used the term or anyone in my circles did back then.....use Resto-Cal or Resto-Custom or Retro-Cal or Cal-Resto or what ever the media is calling it now.............It was simply called CalStyle back in the 80's, sure there was Vintage Calstyle in my circles but whatever the LA neighborhood it always had the term "CalStyle" in it.

Awesome stories. I have another one to add:

We all had our secret stashes (people we would buy stuff from) There was an older gentleman named Bob, that lived up in the hills of El Sereno off Ithaca, he had worked at Century VW when they were open in Alhambra as a body shop man. When they shut down, he bought their used inventory. We would go every so often when we had cash to buy stuff for our rides. My brother picked up a W decklid from him for $20. I bought a set of notchback fenders with Red flats for $40, we even got a tool box for $50. He never wanted to show us the NOS stuff, but we saw it anyways. He had NOS Ghia and 356 complete fenders and parts. He even ahd Empi steering wheels and Univent sets for type 1 and type 3. Some Yahoo who shall remain nameless, alerted Russ from Russ's recycling and Russ picked up the whole loot for around 2K. At least that's what Bob told us.

Man!! I think that's the guy I bought some NOS Euro Ghia tail-lenses from. Did he have a primered Oval window? My homie Rene was seeing a girl that lived near Copeland at that time & He took me to this guy that I can't remember his name but lived in the hills and had some VDub hard to find parts.
