Wanted to say hello and head over to the FAQ's to start learning. Been restoring for years but never a VW. This is my dad's 73 Beetle that I brought home yesterday, he's owned it since 1991. He's getting up in years and its been getting tougher for him to work on it, even to get around, so he asked if I wanted it. I knew it was near and dear to him, plus it's a neat little car, so of course I said yes to keep it in the family.
Its been repainted, original color was sort of a sky blue, but other than that I think everything is original. No rust. I've seen carb/dist designations mentioned here but I have no idea yet about any of that He also said something about the wheels (California wheels?) but not sure if they were original or not.
Needs a few things but runs nice. Current fix needed is looks like the nut on the alternator pulley has stripped out, shaft threads look ok, so I need to replace that and re-install the belt. He's got all the shims for it. Also need to replace the 2 chrome exhaust tubes and the verticals (rubber part) on the bumpers. Plus whatever else I find along the way.
Other than that, going to go over everything, do a nice clean-up and enjoy it Lots to learn too ....

thanks
I had also wanted to ask about parts sourcing, I'm only interested in quality parts. Are there some primary go-to's for parts sources? Apologies if it's been covered, I'm going to spend some time and SEARCH!
Example is the 2 exhaust pipes, looking for good quality stainless, OEM replacement style, not cheap plated import stuff
thanks again. |

Welcome to theSamba. The original color of your car looks like the same color as the first Beetle I drove when I was in High School. Ours was a 72 standard Beetle in Marina Bue. It might still be my favorite color for a Beetle.
For parts, I REALLY like the quality and service of Wolfsburg West, West Coast Metric, and CB Performance. Recently I used Airhead Parts for some bearings no one else had in stock, and was pleased with the service there too. _________________ Brian

I did a bit of research thru the papers and yes, the original color was Marina Blue
thanks also for the parts sourcing, I ordered up a set of nice new stainless exhaust tips. I'm sure it needs other stuff but decided to get my feet wet and get the bug a little gift lol.
I did find some info and wanted to ask for your input/recommendations as I don't really have a frame of reference for what I'm reading.
- original cab was Solex 34PICT-3, was replaced with new Solex H30/31PCT.
- distributor was replaced with a centrifugal advance unit. I don't have the make handy, but it looks like an original (points) style unit. All I found in the paperwork was JF-4 and serial number 968-0231-176009.
Did the orginal distributor have vacuum advance? I don't really have anything against a points-style distributor as long as I use Bosch points, but should I consider a vacuum advance unit? I'm very familiar with how they work, setting up advance curves, etc but the VW is new to me, not sure what works the best. Engine is a 46 hp AK series, does that sound right?
As mentioned the car runs nice and has had regular maintenance, but I do see some things that need attention.
More to come I'm sure |

Your carb/dist combo is used by many and was the "go to" replacement combo for many years, at least since I've had Bugs, 1986. If it runs good I'd leave it alone, enjoy it and fix other things. _________________ 1972 1302

Your 73 standard looks like it is in very good condtion. I would imagine that most of the issues have been sorted out by your dad.
I too have a 73 std. I like the wheels on yours for sure. If possible show a closer pictures of them. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

If it ain't broke .... Well I might still tinker with it lol. But first I need to get to know it, how it drives etc. Need to get the alt belt back on, first try will be to get another nut for the pulley. Would anyone happen to know the size/ thread pitch?
Will get some additional pics including the wheels and will post specific questions in separate posts.
Thanks again for a nice welcome |

Every nut and bolt on your car is metric, most is standard pitch. I dont have my car here to measure but I guess it is 10 or 12 mm. You will save a lot of trouble the sooner you start to think metric when you start working on a german car.
Nice car by the way. _________________ 1973 1303S w sunroof Click to view image
