Anybody have a DIY garage in their area? I've always been interested in the concept. I know of DIY Garage in Escondido and I think SpeedoJosh mentioned one in NC. I can't imagine my neighbors enjoy my sidewalk oil changes...

Not sure of your area, but THE BEST DIY shops I have found are on military bases. Too bad they are not open to the public. Having a friend in the military would be a big help....

I don't know if it's open to non-students but it couldn't hurt to call the shop at MSU (or any other University for those of you not in Bozeman). When I was a student I used the shop all the time. They have lifts, tire mounting machines, you name it. Oh, and heat too.

That is a great idea ~ I am pretty sure they are only open to students, but well worth a phone call!

Fabulous idea, and lord knows I need one bad. I'm tired of living without a garage and I hate laying in the cold mud, on a slant with poor lighting to do anything on my rigs. I keep threatening my wife that I'm going to rip out the organic garden and start building a garage, I think $$ is the only think stopping me, well that and the old lady.

I keep advertising on CL to rent someone's garage for a few months to work on projects. Never had any takers yet.

Hah! I used to be accused of being a perpetual student, but this would be ridiculous!

But maybe if I combined it with a minor in financial indebtedness...

I have yet to find one in Vancouver BC. I know one existed, way back when, but now?

benandmj. FWIW, I tried really hard not to "over stay my welcome" (working in a carport, making a racket, swearing a lot) while wrenching a lot in my back yard. Now I don't so much anymore. I try to be aware of my neighbours needs but there is a balance that can be had. My biggest concern about working on the street is the other drivers and my legs!

Neil.

this is an interesting concept! I've often wished I could ask my brother in law if I could work in his heated garage, but he is the kind that waxes the garage floor, and I'm not that good.

my coffee shop is a converted gas station. I wonder if the owners of empty service stations could be approached with turning them into a self-serve shop? or if any would allow a person a short term rental? can a person rent a storage unit to do mechanic work? either of these would take a generator or other power source and a portable heater, but are a possibility, I guess.

Called MSU shop master and they don't do that anymore. They stopped about 6 or 7 years ago. He wasn't aware of anywhere in Boz that does that...

Regarding the DIY shop on the MSU campus in Bozeman - I'm sitting in my lab which is next door to where it used to be (currently Campus Stores storage). They closed it because nobody used it enough to justify the expense. Total bummer. It probably wasn't cheap though. I hear they used to have a full time mechanic that would work with you and help and they had tools!

No van work for me until the snow melts.....likely in May!
