The spring is shown, to get better throttle return put the spring bracket in the hole to the right, to pull across. do this on both carbs, works a treat!

Hello the samba,
I got some dual carbs and have them almost all set up. I need to know if you put 2 different fuel hoses from the fuel pump for each carb. Or do you do it another way? If someone can help me out. I would be thankful.

I remember your first posts a month or so ago. You were the guy with all the polls. You might think I'm a jerk but this car is gonna haunt you unless you have your friend who is good with old cars around you all the time Exclamation

Think about it. Your first posts on this forum were about the car not running right in the rain or the cold. You asked if dual carbs would cure the problem and someone said no so you bought electronic ignition. Then you posted about your broken electronic ignition, your broken distributor and all that jazz

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?search_id=usertopics&user=306273

Now you got the dual carbs and you still got problems.

I'm no maestro and I f**k things up all the time by overthinking or under thinking. You got to go about things systematically and intelligently and thoughtfully or you're just gonna be running in circles Exclamation Exclamation The way you post about "dual carbs" as if they were all the same tells me that you're just not thinking things through.

Plus you shouldn't put new carbs on an engine you aren't sure of or didn't have running right!! If you keep buying parts to cure or get around problems you'll be broke and still have a broken car!!! You'll wind up selling the car and you won't get your money back.

Guys who sell their cars quickly or hide them in the garage for a few years before selling them are the guys who gave up because they thought working on "old VW's" was easy. They were right. It is easy. But you have to be systematic. Otherwise you do a bunch of random easy things that don't fix your problem Idea

I know it was the carb freezing and how I know is because the heat risers were clogged when I removed the manifold. The car runs great, just had some problems with carb freezing. Also a old vw engine is going to need some fixes. I also didn't know what the poll ment at the time so I would put random stuff in it. Now I know and am learning about my car. The electronic ignition helped get better timing. My dual carbs are just weird because they are not set up right. Because I am only 16 and new to this, I didn't set them up correctly so my friend is going to get them all going for me.

RocketA , That photo is very helpful and it did fix my problem. Now I got 2 more things then I am done. I need to get the throttle cable set up and what do I do with heat riser holes. Do you cover them with something?

Ok I did that and it was no problem. Its sounding great. All now is throttle cord and maybe a little idle mixture tweaking which I might wait for my friend to do that.

Here is my setup

Now I need to know how much the carb's throttle should be when gas is all the way down. Is this too much or not enough?

At full throttle, the throttle butterfly should be exactly parallel with the flow of air-fuel through the carb throat. If it is not open all the way you have unused performance.
Be careful in that some carbs that do not have a stop for the WOT position can be opened beyond WOT and the butterfly can start to close again.

Whether you limit the motion via the cable adjustment or the linkage, you want the throttle plates parallel with the airflow at WOT/pedal to the floor.

When I rev the engine up a lot, I get a little bit of popping. Is that normal on dual carbs or does that mean it needs a little bit more adjusting?

Could be vacuum leak, too lean of a mixture, incorrect timing, or incorrectly adjusted valves.

Ok well I will buy some carb cleaner for vacuum leaks and adjust valves soon. Also for timing it stays the same right. I have a 009 dizzy and I use 7 degrees before TDC and about 35-36 degrees when rpms rise.

Needs to be max of 32 degrees. 35-36 is too much and could be your problem.

Ok well I timed it and did a valve adjustment. I am getting worse power and terrible gas mileage. I have done everything I can do for months and I think I just need to get it checked by a professional because I have tried everything that can be causing low power and bad gas mileage problems.

I am not giving up. Its just as an un experience teen, I should have gotten it checked by a mechanic when I first got it. I work on it Pretty much every weekend and after school. I just am frustrated that it this is happening. I do not know of any vw clubs around. I will keep researching like I always do and try to solve the problem. I am located in Santa Clarita, California.

the mechanic figured out some problems with sparking and spark plug wires too. I have better performance and gas mileage now. Thanks for the help and I hope my dual carbs will stay good for a while or so. So far no problems.
