I might need to start a new thread for this but here goes.
Anyone have any idea what I'll need to change in the electrical system to convert from 220v to 110v?
Obviously this is within the house system only. My big concern is the built in factory battery charger.
Thanks for any help. _________________ Currently:

I imagine the 16" weighs more than your poptop syncro so it may not be apples to apples but how does the Zetec compare to the 112hp DJ? _________________ 1990 Multivan 2.1 AT |

Driving the Joker home from Tacoma it was empty, and I usually drive the Syncro Westy full of camp gear, so I would reckon the Joker was lighter!
The aerodynamics of the hightop is actually pretty good so close there also.
The Joker has much larger wheels and different final gearing though, so that's different.
That said, the DJ pulled really well and I was impressed, however there really isn't a comparison to the Zetec.
It is a modern engine with higher revs. More reliable and stronger.
But....I won't know for sure how it compares until I switch engines! _________________ Currently:

The only things on the mains circuit are...
- Fridge element
- Charger
- RCD/"Fuse" & sockets.
The fridge element's probably a straight swap-out for a US 110v one, since the fridges are pretty much the same. The original charger's a pile of poo anyway, so swap that for something a bit more intelligent without losing any sleep (we went for a Ctek MXS5.0 when our original died). The sockets are a personal preference thing, but would significantly reduce the hassle of using the van. The RCD might be the only slightly tricky thing - I gather it's an odd form factor - but nothing a bit of light trimming wouldn't solve. You could just replace it with a straight fuse, of course, but an RCD is a good safety thing. _________________ Adrian

Thanks Adrian,
Bummer that the factory charger is junk. Oh well, I won't feel bad pulling it!
The rest sounds straight forward. _________________ Currently:

Don't feel at all bad!
It's big, heavy, chucks out a stack of heat and noise (it's known as the "Buzzing Black Box"), and doesn't even do a great job - it doesn't do a "float" or "maintenance" mode at all. Really old low-tech. The one advantage to it is that it charges both batteries independently, but it's simple work to move the interior lights & radio to the leisure battery - just a fused lead straight from the leisure, under the carpet, and in to the upper terminal of the clock/light/radio fuse in the fuse box - then there's no need to charge the starter battery. _________________ Adrian

Yeah - and I like the way they put the harlequin 'Joker' insignia on the side of the high top. Nice work being done there! _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Nicely done, but doesn't look like it started life as a hightop - the gutter above the windscreen's missing, for a start - have you got any better pics of how the rear of the roof's been fitted? Looks like the rear lip - where the metal reinforcer that's bonded into the glassfibre then rivetted to the tailgate lip - has been done away with. Looks like a very neat solution - they often leak water from there, the way Westfalia did it.. _________________ Adrian
