PostPosted: Wed Mar 20, 2013 10:56 pm    Post subject: Bus engine 2110 ok with 018 distributor? Reply with quote

The engine that will be powering my split bus is a 2110 engine with engle 110, dellorto DRLA 36s, 5.4" rods, empi 42 in. 37 exh. heads.

Will the curve of the Bosch 018 work well on a bus? It will have the vacuum advance hooked up, but was the original vacuum advance ported vacuum, or manifold vacuum?

Thanks, Gordo.

That engine is screaming for a Bosch 010.

That's it? That's the sales pitch? I get it, simple, yet elligent and straight to the point.

You are the expert, so please explain why. Starting with what the 018 will do wrong for a daily driver bus with a mild 2110cc.

Thanks , Gordo.

018? Do you mean this one 0231 163 018? Can't tell when you only supply the last 3 digits.

If so that's for a Type 3 with FI. Odds are the vacuum signal from the IDF will not be correct and the curve is surely not performance oriented.

Sales pitch.... i'm not the only source for Bosch 010. Many times I suggest distributors I don't work on.

I also would not of put heads with 42 intakes and a W-110 cam. Do the heads have dual springs or single HD springs? 36 Dells with 42 intakes is also questionable.

If you have the 018 then give it a try.

If you want to discuss call me at 597.

No, because the OP specifically referenced vacuum advance. The 019 is mechanical advance only.

Sorry Glenn, not ripping you about sales pitch for real, couldn't find the sarcasm smiley.
Yes, it is the 0 231 163 018. Yes it was a type 3 FI distributor. Yes it is single spring heads. DRLAs 36s because I have them. And so on. Asking about the distributor, the rest of the build has been dealt with on other threads...relatively low revving, torque building, daily driver (spring to fall).

Reason for considering this distributor? Well, I am not looking to get the best drag times, it's a bus. With a vacuum advance it could idle better, have the advantage of advance at cruise and retard for full throttle, to avoid detonation issues. A small canister inline for the vacuum should smooth out the carb pulses and operate as intended.
I believe this distributor has 25deg mechanical advance, and is it 12deg vacuum, giving a total of 37 deg all in by 3500 rpm ?

If I am wrong about this educate me. Or just fill your screen with laughter.

Thanks for any info or help about this distributor. Gordo.

I tried to call you ...no answer at 597, could it be 597 "010" ?

Oddly enough, I am old enough to remember just dialing four digits.

Not to be an ass about it, but why don't you put it on and find out for yourself? I take everyone's advice with a grain of salt.

As stated, since you own it.. .give it a try.

As far as a vacuum/mechanical... it's try a Bosch 034 or 205zb. Maybe you can borrow one for a few days before buying one.

I find used 034s in the swaps for $20-$30. It might be usable but you can always clean and lube it.

Thanks, I plan to run it for awhile when my bus is completed. I do understand about the advise from others, there is allot to wade through before the trusted advisers chime in with there gems of knowledge and years of experience. Like having to climb a mountain to speak to the Dalai Lama.

Ok since nobody touched this, and maybe they didn't see, I'll put this out there, for future reference if nothing else, all distributors have a unique curve, which is why VW ended up with several distributors for what appeared to be a single engine, but it was the application of those engines that either necessitated a different distributor, or small differences in the build of the engine(that might appear negligible). as far as I can see, vacuum will be better at getting mpg, but throw a 034 on a 30/31, you probably won't see a difference, as compared to an 034 and 34-pict, because of the vacuum, the 30/31 doesn't pull enough, and if your experimental maybe you tried a vacuum only on the 34pict; I have once, blew two canisters because the vacuum was too much. point is each engine has an optimal advance curve, for both performance and mileage, driving and logging advance points is best, then finding a distributor to match it best

but there comes a time when so many tests have been made, we can look and say, "Hey, this distributor works the best on this size engine with similiar cam and intake"; doesn't mean changes can't be done, I mean you want the best, go crank fired ignition, with programmable curves

As long as you have the knowledge to tune it.

How does this SVDA differ from my "0 231 163 018" svda distributor other than the FI point set?

Do these numbers jive with it?
Timing Set At:: 7.5deg BTDC @ 800-950rpm w/strobe and w/single vacuum hose disconnected and plugged
Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 8-12deg Adv; Centrifugal: 8deg @ 1300rpm, 10deg @ 1600rpm, 15deg @ 2500rpm, 20deg @ 3000rpm, 21deg @ 3500 to 4000rpm

Or are you aware or have tested for numbers on the 018?

Gordo.

I don't work on the aluminum modes but they have different curves and vacuum requirements. That's why they have different part numbers.

Is one better for your application... I don't know.

thanks Glenn, You've been a great help, as always. I will try out my distributor...I may in the end, decide to get an 010 from you after the break in period and some testing.

Not too much support here for the SVDA distributors in a mild performance street engine.

Thanks Gordo.
