Id try running it very shortly with the fan belt off.. If it still makes the noise it MIGHT be the fly wheel has come loose... But, if it still makes the noise when the fan belt is off Id drain the oil and look for metal shiney bits first. |

That's the engine tin hitting the inside of the crank pulley, Needs a slight tweak with a long flat blade screwdriver. Stop the engine and place the screwdriver on the right side and behind the pulley and shove the tin back a little more. It could make it worse but you will figure out which way to move it through trial and error. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

This could cause that knocking noise? Or are you talking about the constant rubbing wine? _________________ (Owner) www.vintagecarleds.com

The whine or screech sound, perhaps that's just the whistle of the exhaust or the whine of the fan belt.
I just listened to mine here: Cold Start, it's a little clunky but I think it's just the fan belt slapping around. Belt sounds will tend to clear up if you squirt water on the belt. Looks like I need to adjust my fan belt. My engine clucks a little bit which I thinks may be due to a small amount of end-play in the crankshaft, I am not worried about it but will rebuild it before another 12000 miles. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

don't sound like a rod to me...rod knock is distinctive, it sounds like a rhythmic hammer,a sharp knock the gets worse under load. |

Agreed, sounds more so valve train related to me. Try using a mechanic's stethoscope or suitable substitute to narrow down where exactly the noise is coming from. |

My bus once had a similar sound when the rocker arm actually came loose. Pop off the valve cover, check the rocker arms for tightness and since you're there, check the valves real quick too!

Yeah Mine too. The Rocker would some how shift sideways and come off the valve. Mine kind off sounded like a loud loose valve tappet though on top of the clatter I am hearing on his video. I wonder if it is the flywheel coming loose again. I use Loctite blue on mine. Loctite Blue 242. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

loose or busted cam rivets, pull the oil pump and see, just found some on a 1915 a couple weeks ago that had a 3 rivet cam in it. |

Pulled the engine, the shop put it on an engine stand, they know the noise is internal, but not sure what it is without a tear down....
Flywheel is fine.
Replaced the clutch while it was out.
Later today when its cold, im going to re-torque the rocker arms, and adjust the valves.
Ill update if that fixes it.

I had a 1200 that sounded like that. The crank cracked on a stress riser from being drilled for balancing.
It was still held in place by bearings but was in 2 pieces _________________ 1974 Standard Beetle to Baja Bug

when you say it could be a broken crank, Wouldn't I notice something wrong?
I/E when im driving at 65-70 mph notice some loud issues coming from the engine bay?
Still drives just fine.. its just that noise worries the shit out of me.
Adjusting valves tonight when cold to check. _________________ (Owner) www.vintagecarleds.com

I just took apart a 74 bug engine that had been run quite a bit with a broken crankshaft. It was spitting case shavings all over behind the flywheel. Needless to say it ruined the case. Photo. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |
