I changed the exhaust to fix a rich running problem, started it to check for leaks and it sounded fine. Started it the next day and it had the most horrendous sound coming from the valvetrain. The loudest tick I have ever heard in a vehicle. Drove it 20 min, still making crazy noise. I then parked it for 2 days, and then BAM gone, no more noise when I started it up to move it.

What could that of been? I'm not complaining that it went away.

Could have been a stuck valve or a loose valve seat! Is it air or water cooled?

A collapsed hydraulic lifter immediately springs to mind.

If the engine stopped with lifter X holding open a valve and it is weak or dirty it bled down. The next time you parked it lifter X was at rest with a closed valve and had a chance to relax and regain its "shape". Hence noise is gone. It WILL happen again given time.

Make sure you are running detergent oil that will clean up deposits.
Try running some marvel mystery oil in your oil for a few thousand miles to clean out deposits.

Detergent oil?

I think the last time I saw non-detergent oil was during the Carter years.

Yeah......... I was well into adulthood during those years! I clearly remember non detergent oils and the sludge they would leave behind.

I just purchased some 30w Non Detergent..... Had to order it special! Was for a pressure washer pump.

Let me revise that to use a QUALITY NAME BRAND OIL. These most often are more reliable for their additive packages.

It is already back to ticking, after I moved it again to give it a wash. Not nearly as bad though....How horrible is it to ignore it for 100-200 miles? I figure if it doesn't go away again it's about to bite it (258k stock motor)

Many many MANY old Chevys with 283's 3o2's 307's 327's 350's etc ran for decades with stuck lifters!

As long as the valves are opening and closing you should be fine. You do have a physical clearance on the tappet where none was designed for..... Damage can result.

I always found stuck lifters to be annoying! I eventually replaced them on my 1968 307 Chevelle back in the early 70's just to get rid of the ticking!

A common issue with these engines. Mine will do it from time to time also. Mine usually goes away within 10-15 min. Have you tried adjusting your valves? Even though you have hydraulic lifters, the valves ARE adjustable. Instructions and clearances are in the Bentley manual.

My Camaro had hellacious valve train noise with its 302 motor but I don't think it was because of collapsed lifters it had SOLID lifters for high RPM the better to win TransAm championships with. Same can be said for my wife's 70 LT-1 Vette.

That clatter will return.

This is a good time to run some MMO through.

Change the oil too.

This is likely a lifter as above

Search on MMO to find out more......
