Can someone tell me what is involved with removal of the transmission input shaft needle bearing from the crankshaft? Is a puller required? I tried to pull it out with my finger with no luck.
Thanks
Tim

Something like a slide hammer with a hooked end would work. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Tool stores sell a specific pilot bearing puller for this. But a sweet trick if the bearing hasn't fallen apart or gotten too hot is to pack the entire area behind the bearing with a heavy grease. Then use a mainshaft/clutch centering tool and insert into bearing. Tap with a hammer and if it is not stuck too tight, it will come out. Not sure if those plastic clutch centering tool will work. |

I've heard about using grease to remove a starter bushing for years but never had the opportunity to try it. I tried it last night for the pilot bearing and it worked. I cut a piece of aluminum rod on the lathe to fit the pilot busing and Bingo; came out after a few bangs with a 5 lb hammer.

Buy or rent a pilot bearing removal tool. If you try a chisel you will find out about the quality of steel used to make bearings. |

One guy even mentioned putting shavings from a bar of soap behind the bearing instead of using grease and then pounding in the dowel in order to push out the bearing. I actually think that might work. I don't think the grease was working on mine because the grease was too light. _________________ '73 Westy (dual stock carbs, SVDA w/ compufire)

I put a long screw with 2 washers thru the bearing, put a nut on the outside threaded end and used a crow bar. Out it came. Cheapo instant puller. Put PB Blaster all around it first though and wait 15-20 minutes. _________________ Working on a VW is like fun with a friend!

Forgot to say the screw is small compared to the center hole of the washers. They are a sloppy fit on the screw and edges grab the inside edge of the bearing. _________________ Working on a VW is like fun with a friend!

Look, maybe you guys don't know what a slide hammer is so here:
I'm not saying that you need to go buy a special tool like this but just look at it and you should understand how it works. All you need to do is grab the bearing on the back side with a metal hook and then whack it out of there using a heavy object. You can use a 2 pound hammer head, a hook, and connect them with wire or cable. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum
