I have liked them never had one so not sure what to look for and what to stay away from. Any input would be great.
I am sure the same applys from type 1 and 2 stay away from rust.

Right, rust is bad. A-pillars, front fenders, inner fenders close to the a-pillars into the trunk, under the battery, rockers etc. Body panels are NLA, most of the front end is NLA but can be fabbed from other parts. No interior parts are available etc. Do some reading in the threads here and the decide if you really want to tackle a Type 4 project. It will be because you like the car, not for any resale value. They are great cars but totally unappreciated in the VW world.

There are 6+ of them at Blair & Sons in Phoenix, all in various states of disrepair. I tried to buy the most complete 411 from them and they shot me a sky-high price. Maybe it was to not have to deal with it. Point being is there's a few parts cars down there that between all of them, you could replace / repair pretty much anything one might be missing.

Do you have your eye on one or just kicking around the idea?

Just kicking around the idea for sure.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1560393

yes it is not running so if I was to make an offer it would be like maybe $1,000 tops. (The only thing that needs to be replaces is the fuel pump.) ya right. Makes you wonder why the wipers are not parked.

Fun car, rare as it is a 2 door with the accessory wheel caps. Non running drives the price down for sure but the condition of the body is the big thing. Seller seems motivated to sell which may mean that the issues are more than a fuel pump.

Hi there,

the type 4 is the most underrated aircooled Volkswagen. Where else you have a "modern" car with plenty of room and the "old vintage" aircooled emotion?

Fenders, doors, bumpers, instruments and dashboard is no problem to find.

Seats, sheetmetal, exterior trim is much harder to grap.

Bought a project car in Norway 2 weeks ago (blue one), found a nice car in sweden last year (red one).

I agree with gt1953. Without it running, there is no way to know the condition the rest of the engine, the manual tranny with virtually no replacement parts, or anything else ... and having it shipped or towed from Texas will be an adventure and an extra cost.

The wiper position raised a flag with me, too, as did no mention of a/c (indicating he doesn't know it's there or why it doesn't work), "starts but doesn't currently run" (whatever that means), the funky aftermarket speakers and wheel covers, and referring to the engine as Porsche.

On top of all of that, he's got a car that doesn't run parked on the street rather than at least on his parking pad.

If the "only thing" it needed was a fuel pump, I'd pay someone to fix it regardless of how strictly little time I would have. Then, it might be worth me flying there to see it. Of course, he would still need to find time in his strictly tight schedule for me to test drive it and get have its title turned over to me (assuming it even has one).

Pretty car. Fishy ad.

While the true mechanical condition of the car is suspect (no mention of the soundness of the front end), the wheel covers were available from VW. If I didn't have a set of 5.5 sport wheels, I would love to have those.

I am glad I started this thread...sorta reminds me when looking for the type 1's in the garage. It is all about the body condition, then mechanicals. The type IV is rare to find items for them on this side of the pond. Yep would like to have one, not as a major project. Question is, does this one seem worth going after? That I am learning. Like the type 1 I missed a few good ones along the way.

It looks nice if you could get it for a decent deal. I wouldn't pay a whole lot for it, seeing as the market for these is quite small. I actually sent this link to my girlfriend, as she thinks they're cute and wants one as a DD. She wants a blue 4 door though...

If I was closer, (a reasonable drive away) I would personally go look at it and if it looked pretty good close up (there is a bit of rust on the DS front fender), make an offer. It's a rare car, it's complete and doesn't look like it's been beat like a rented mule. That said, very few people want these cars, parts can be a PITA to find (esp the 4-spd transmission) and it doesn't run. The seller's price is based on it being rare but if it's gently explained that rare in this case doesn't really mean valuable, you could get the car for much less. Personally, I don't pay much for non-running cars.

I'm in the market for a Type IV, and I've also contacted the seller of this car. He didn't know what a "rocker" was when I asked him about the rust in the drivers' side front rocker.

He seems like a fairly nice guy, but just not too knowledgeable about the cars.

He sent me a closeup of the rust, and I'd say that once it gets sanded off, it'll be a fairly big piece. Leads me to believe that the heater channel up there will need work.

That all being said, it's a 2-door with manual transmission..most of what I've seen on this site and craigslist have been autos.

Hope this helps.

Joe

The US only received auto transmissions in the Type 4's, the 2 door being the exception. Where I am, in Canada, we received a mix of autos and manuals. I have 4 of these cars, and they are all Variants and split evenly between auto and manual transmissions.

As Ray has noted, the manuals are nearly impossible to find parts for, and if they are damaged, the are boat anchors.

It is sold to someone the seller just sent me a mail on it. I may have hemmed and hawed around to much. Oh well.

I forgot about the wheel covers. I need to unpack my catalogs, books, manuals, etc. because I've moved and I don't remember as much as I think I do. Embarassed

Don't beat yourself up, gt1953. If you still would consider buying and shipping (TX to AZ) a non-running 412, you have more latitude in your expectations and considerations than I do. Another one will turn up, and this learning experience will only help you.

I wish I were in a position to be less narrow.

Oh I agree it is not a big deal. I would have gone there first. I do need to learn more about the type 4's. I messed up on a few type 1 deals as well but live an learn.

I know you aren't in Cali, but this seems on the surface to be a very solid 411 for a reasonable price.
