First off, "race car" is a very subjective term in this instance. I am building a 24 hours of lemons road-racer out of this 412:

The $50 Swap meet engine with a kludged-on carter two-barrel. Yeeeehaw!

For those of you who don't know, the 24 hours of lemons is burning man for cars. It's a big party where everyone races the most oddball car they can think of and the point isn't to go fast or win, it's to mess around on a race track with cars that have no business on a race track. As of right now, no one has campaigned a type 4 in lemons, and one of the main organizers has compiled a list of cars they want to see, and the VW 411 / 412 is at the top of the list:
http://blog.caranddriver.com/lemons-cars-wed-like-to-see-part-1/

As it sits right now, the car needs to be completely gone through to make it stop, steer, run and drive (in that order). The rules state we can only spend $500. Fortunately, safety items (cage, seat, brakes, harness, tires & wheels, tie rods, ball joints) don't count toward the $500 limit. Things that do count are Shocks / Struts, suspension bushings, engine / transmission parts, fuel delivery (ex tank, hoses, filter), etc.

The nice thing is I can sell off the un-needed parts off of the car to offset the original purchase price to get it back down to $0, therefor allowing $500 worth of upgrades / repairs. What I'm saying in not so few words is that I'll be stripping this sucker down and all non-essential parts will be up for grabs. I'll post something in the classifieds to that effect when it comes to that.

Right now, I'm doing lots and LOTS of reading in this forum (and on Shop Talk forum) about the common questions everyone seems to have. This is my 3rd Type 4, so I'm not exactly a newbie but I'm sure I'll have my fair share of questions.

Check out the 24 hours of lemons series at the following link.
http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/

I've set up a facebook page for the team. Follow us if you dare.

Thanks in advance for all the stupid questions that will no doubt be forthcoming.

I have a rustier twin to your car. Mine is missing the relay to the A/C. It is on the lower half, in the middle of the A/C unit. I was hoping to get a part number or even a picture of the damn thing. I am having a ton of trouble just getting any information on the A/C add-on.
Thank you in advance.

Post a pic of the area. I have A/C on my '73 that I can take a look at for you.

Those the rare aluminum bumpers you are going to beat up? I have a decent set of steel bumpers to trade for them.

If I understand you correctly, it's a relay under the dash behind the ac unit? I'll look for it tomorrow.

I can't really see all that well from the pics but if any of that side trim is good, remove it and sell it. Also interesting that it has a regular steering wheel with the Sun Bug edition horn pad.
