Hi Guys,

Firstly, I realise that several people make good wiring looms but I enjoy making them and have found several sources for the components.

The cars a june 1950. Sadly the whole loom was removed before I bought the car.

I have found this link which is a great help for the main loom

http://www.historicvws.abelgratis.com/technical/wiring_looms/split_main_loom.htm

But wondered is anyone had similar details for the front.

Also wondered if anyone knew when they went from cloth outer to PVC outer?? I know the wires should be cloth covered but when did the outer change?

Lastly does anyone know the colour of the thicker dynamo cable (6mm dynamo to battery) and if its orange does anyone have a source for it?? Can only get a few colours that thick unless I order 100m

Seb

The wires changed from Cloth covered to PVC before they switched from the cloth looming. My Oct '51 has PVC wiring with cloth loom except for the harness that goes to the hi beam switch. It is PVC wiring and loom and the loom has Siemens printed on it.

Your car should have the cloth covered wire with the cloth braided loom around the harness.

Cool, thought so

Just need to double check the colour of the 6mm wire that goes from starter to dynamo.

And if anyone has a front loom to measure I would be greatful. Although I can build it in situe and do it that way

Thanks

Seb

Cheers

Useful company but way too far from me!!

I'm happy with the main loom and the lower front loom for the main lights but would love some info on the upper front loom.

I can chase a few of the wire but without an old loom to copy its a little complex. The closest thing I have to a template is the photo on the zarwerks website Embarassed

A list of whats in the loom would be great, an idea of dimensions would be amazing! Anyone got an old one to measure

Seb

I have been making split harnesses for 10+years now. As posted previously, Cloth on cloth would be correct for 1950. As for the battery positive cable, the documentation for 1950 (see the wiring page in the the tech section) calls for black. in '51 it specifies "Black or Red". I sell both, but most people want red.

As for the dimensions of the upper front, below is a partial paste of a spreadsheet that I use to record dimensions. Of course this only gives you wire length, not loom exit location. I have built up a large collection of original harnesses over the years, from '46-'53, as well has Hebs and convertibles, and dimensions I have are very accurate.

I assemble upper fronts on a "nail board" and I do not presently have the harness diagrammed in electronic format that shows wire branch exit locations. I have it "on my list" to do one day, but don't presently have it done. Hopefully the table below is of some use to you.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Also note that 20 gauge wire is not available in cloth from my suppliers and it is the nearest AWG equivalent to 0.50mm^2 wire. For these, I use 19guage.

Hi

Suppliers are always useful. Even if for others and not me.

John. That's amazing and very kind of you to share. I can happily go from there and use the car as the peg board for that upper front.

Thanks again!

Seb

For any other UK guys I find autosparks.co.uk have most in stock at good prices. They also offer a branding service.

A quick price up reveals you don't save much! Unless like me, you like making looms then buy johns!
