The ignition switch on my '83 waterboxer Westy doesn't seem to have any sort of accessory position. It's 'Off,' 'On' and 'Start.' The only way I can play my radio when I'm camped is to have the switch in the 'On' position. Somehow it just feels wrong to leave the switch in this position without the engine running. I know that used to be a real 'no-no' with a points type of ignition system but I don't know if I can damage anything by leaving the switch in the 'On' position. Are all vanagon ign. switches this way? If later model Vanagons have a 4 position switch, could mine be retrofitted?

The radio was an option in the early Vanagons, so I think it was always on like the lighter. I don't like to leave mine in the "start" position for very long without the engine running, and as you've noticed there is no ACC position on the ignition switch. I'm going to wire mine to my aux battery if I ever get around to it.
