So long as those 2 are still around that makes it 3 coupes! Result, any more? |

I've removed the picture of how I'd held it in the air, don't want to be held responsible for causing someone to get hurt!
In replacement here's a pic of some roof up action....

Does anyone know who did the conversions?
Was this a VW official conversion, or a separate company all together?

It was a dealer option, this was converted from new in 1959 before the first owner took delivery as it's a UK from new car.
It's got M code M108 - Custom Model with M951 - rear-view mirror which accounts for the two external mirrors.
There are 4 known examples of this conversion, 3 coupes and this cabrio - all original and untouched. |

Sorry - thread from the dead - but thought you might be interested in the car I recently bought - VFO 496 - one of the famous 3 + 1 :
The cab' looks beautiful by the way - very cool
I have some correspondence from the owner of the Aero Silver car in the history file I have aquired with mine. A Mr Don Rogers from 'Rustington' - wonder if he still has it?
In a bit of a rush this morning but interested to know what information you may have on the company that did the conversion..!?
Cheers for now,
Steve (Oxford UK) |

Hi Gareth,
Hope all is good in your world of RHD Lowlight ownership?
I stumbled across this the other day courtesy of someone on another forum, it's from Motorsport Magazine dated June 1958, I've done a bit of searching and unfortunately Acland and Tabor ceased trading in the early 60's. I guess more could be found out by tracking individuals. Whether or not they carried out the conversions on our cars is still open, but interesting all the same!
I bought the original clipping off eBay, but feel free to take a copy or I can send a better quality .pdf if you give me an email address.
Take it easy.....

If there is any truth in the name of the locale, then I very much doubt that the car still survives.
Let's hope there's no more truth to the locale name than there is in any of these other towns and villages whose names are listed according to their relative positions in Great Britain.

Actually since posting that I have been in touch with Don's son Martin, who is currently 'nailing' (his words not mine!) the car back together for his Dad

Glad to hear it survives!
Sounds like his previous experience with restoring old cars may have involved refreshing the frame on a Morgan at one point. |

Gareth - is this the ghia that was at Carfest North???
Chris Evans was amazed at the workmanship in the cabrio hood and the "security" measures for holding it together
Mine was the black over white slammed coupe in the line up
He loved the KG's! |

Sorry for late response, not looked on here for a while! Yes that was mine, gutted I missed Chris Evans though.
I've managed to be fortunate enough to find a NOS uncut RHD conversion dashboard for the Lowlight Ghia....... Rare is an understatement!

Gareth, that's quite the catch!
Is it a fibreglas moulding? Or a steel stamping? _________________ David Ruby

It's fibreglass, the original metal is behind. |

I need to borrow a set of rubber RHD mats (just the fronts if the borders are smooth, all 4 if they have the pebble texture) as well as the bulkhead mat |
