|

I have a question regarding the re-assembly of our Porsche 356/912 heads.
Is a washer needed under the 8 bolts on only under the top 4?
I have looked into various books. They all indicate to put washers, but they do no indicate how many are needed.
Regarding the gaskets going under the 4 lower bolts, I have had one side (cylinders #3 & #4) where they got distroyed after only a few hundred miles. The other side is in perfect conditions. Any idea what could have caused this? Over torqued? too much heat?
Thank you for your input. |

On late engines, all the head nuts get washers. The nuts have a groove in the shank that indicates a washer is used. If the washers are not used under the lower head bolts, the sealing o-rings will be crushed and destroyed. They may or may not seal but this is incorrect. Also the valve geometry will be thrown off which will require the adjusting nuts to be backed all the way out which closes off the oil passages to the rocker shafts, and also results in stretching the adjusters when the nuts are tightened so that they are no longer functional.

Thank you for the clear information.
When I took the head apart, there was no washers under the lower bolts, that is why I put it back together like that.
I will put them into place. |
