I've seen this topic discussed briefly in other threads, but with no real pictures posted. I've come across several customer 36hp engines that had the wrong dipstick. 36hp dipsticks are longer and marked differently than a 40hp-1600 stick. Using the shorter stick will cause you to over fill the engine making it leak more. There are two 25hp/36hp sticks I know of which is the regular one up to 59 and then the red top 60 only which is marked differently for the engine angle of a 60 due to the front mount. If anyone knows of any others, please post them.
Left to right: 40hp-1600, a later 1600 large loop stick I converted to 36hp length, 25hp/36hp to 59, and a red top 60 only. Note the different markings on the red top. I'll be making some more of the large loop ones as I've run low on 36hp sticks (and no I don't want to buy any). _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

How about some dimensions? The dipstick in my 36 has Audi circles on it, so I'm pretty sure it's not correct... |

I'm working on a page on my website that I will link to this thread on how to make one of the large loop sticks with the right marks and length on it. For now I can tell you some measurements in real simple terms. Measurement was taken from the bottom of the top cap.The regular 36hp dipstick has the first mark at 5 1/4", with the second mark another 1 1/16" from that one. The red top is 5 3/8", with the second mark at 1 1/16" from the top mark. It isn't a precise marking as all the dipsticks I measured varied some, and as you know it seems every engine has it's happy spot for oil level (in other words no two are the same). _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

|
|
I have read this thread and don't find an answer to my situation.
First of all, I have a 65 bug with an engine of unknown size. The reason for this is that the bottom half of the engine block is stamped with a apparently meaningless number that is unrelated to engine size.
My situation is that the oil dipstick bottoms out about 3/4-1" before the cap reaches the block. The dipstick looks exactly like the one in the picture of the technical data page posted earlier. I am assuming that it is a VW dipstick of the aircooled era.
The dimentions are as follows:
155mm from the tip to the bottom of the cap.
15mm from the tip to the bottom mark.
35mm from the tip to the top mark.
I changed oil yesterday and after adding only 2 qts (1/4 qt shy of recommended ) I measured with the dipstick and it measured to the top (full) mark.
I already have a dipstick that is shorter than what I see in this thread and yet it bottoms out approx an inch shy of going all the way in.
Any ideas for what I am experiencing? Thanks. |
