Looks like a very early Porsche race engine to me. It looks a lot like the Type60K10/Typ64 also:

It is a so called "Vogelsang Engine". Gustav Vogelsang was a engine constructor by Porsche in the 1930s / 1940. After the war he was the leading engineer for engines at Volkswagen.

These eninges were constructed for Powerboats of the Wehrmacht, a handfull survived. Some racing-driveds like Petermax Müller or Otto Mathé used that engine as a basement for their racing-motors.

In 1942 there were 3 Porsche projects for a sturmboot (stormboat) engine for the OKW (army high command), 170, 171 and 174, 174 relates to a 'normal VW engine'.

Interestingly the engine pictured above has a wartime fan shroud with holes for the provision of a kraftstoff can and appears to perhaps have a modified schwimmwagen crank pulley?

Cheers!

According to Phil Carney from 356registry the type 357 was a one-off prototype that Porsche made based on heads developed and made (but never used) during the development of the Belin-Rome race car. (According to Phil, the Sturmboot reference is a misunderstanding) After evaluation the prototype was sold to Otto Mathé.

In parallell Gustav Vogelsang, then chief designer for engines at Volkswagen, made a motor based on the same heads for Petermax Muller.

What Phil doesn't mention, but I would like to know, is if these where the kind of heads used on the streamlined VLK coupé in which Kurt Kuhuke won the Braunschweiger Autobanrennen in Augsut 1947. According to my sources it had an engine built by said Gustav Vogelsang and had special heads with valves hanging in a V-position. Anyone got any information to share?
