After a job change and moving to another state, 3 years later I am finally getting back to work on my '56. My plan is to go through the entire brake system, tune up the engine, clean her up a much as possible and get this all original specimen back on the road this summer for the first time in over 30 years!
You can see some more pics of the car in my gallery or if you look back about 3 years ago in this thread.
I'll post some updates as I make progress. Wish me luck!

So are these "Convertible only" door hinge covers with grease fitting only for '53 thru 1956 models? I have a 1957 Kabriolett and it shows no signs of ever having covers or grease fittings. Is that correct? Can any other owners of 1957 model year Kabs confirm this? Out of curiosity, when did these fittings/covers stop?

Well, i'm officially out of the oval convertible ownership group now. Was great learning a ton from this group that helped me finish my car.
Off to new ownership and it'll be undergoing a complete ground up restoration in its future.
Before and after pics:
Good luck to you guys and back to my buses!! |

I asked earlier about what was supposed to be body color and found bumper brackets is on the list. Anyone have a picture of an Inca red vert with matching bumper brackets. I searched and only saw black brackets.
thanks |

Stupid question. Was the grab handle polished or raw metal. Same for the front trunk lock piece that screws to body. I know the handle was chromed, talking about the piece the handle goes in. My pieces don't look like they were ever polished. |

yes they are painted to match the body, so yours should be inca red. My old vert still has all the original inca red bumper brackets and overiders. |

Where can I find the wiring harness tubing that goes through the vert rail. It is about 7 feet long. I was measuring what was left if you're looking at the tape measure. It is metal with cardboard like the heater hoses.

Bill,
According to the book "The VW Beetle by Ryan Lee Price" the grease fittings from the door hinges on all convertibles were dropped on October 23,1956 chassis 1326040. At the same time the outside mirror became a standard equipment.
I hope it helps .

Anyone used their wood? I was looking around for the rear window wood and they came up. I need some of the other wood and their prices are a lot cheaper than others. I have never messed with the wood before. Does the wood matter? I think that the rear tack strip wood have to be sanded to fit but what about the rest. Is Chucks wood better? I don't mind paying more if it matters. I definitely need to order their wood rear window though as Chucks doesn't show it.
thanks, |

My tops hinge pin on the driver side was worn pretty bad. It was a PITA to get out. I measured it and it is the same diameter as a door hinge pin. The problem is it has a domed head. Then I remembered a bus has a domed one. I checked it by an original and it is almost an exact match.
