So yesterday Damo (damoyouknow) and I planned to spend some time in the shop and get things moving.
Plan was to rub down and mask the hang ons and get the underneath in paint, sound deaden the rear seat/firewall area and seam seal the same, and under bonnet.
7am start was in order and we managed to get everything done to plan with Damo flying through the day.
I decided to stop being a slacker and take some decent pics instead of being lazy with my iphone
The shell moved out of the booth so we could gain better access:
Spray on sound deadener applied:
Seam sealing:
Masking up:
Bit of extra 2k primer:
Mixing up the base coat of Glasurit L227 Strato Silver:
Second coat of 109 clear applied to basecoat. These pics do NOT do the finish justice, I was in awe of the result at this stage, and can only imaging what the outside an shell will look like:
It is a beautiful color and very underrated, and i'm not sure why we don't see more Strato bugs in Australia and i'm extremely happy I chose it all those months ago.
Monday we head back into the booth to paint the outside of the hood, engine lid and guards, and also hang ons.
We've got a few little things that we want to tweak on the body shell, so they will be done during the week, with the plan to paint the body shell inside and out next weekend. Exciting times!
Huge thanks go to Willy from Tropic Motors for being so accommodating of us and massive thanks to Damo for his hard work and attention to detail. _________________ www.dinography.com.au - Dino!

Looks fantastic! I really like that color as well. Looking forward to seeing the shell painted.
Nice photographs as you were painting. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Hello All,
Is it just me or is this build amazing? The detail and quality you are putting into your project is seldom seen. When do you think it will be on the road?
John
ps. Dinesh may I use your information and photos as an illustration of the what and how to installing a 3 fold?

First thing we did was get the opening in and c-clamped up to check where we were at with the welding side of things:
Once we were happy with the fit, the car was then taken to another panel shop owned by a friend of mine in Moorabbin (MiColour) where they have a spot welder to weld the roof opening in.
There were a few ideas thrown around, like slow MIG'ing from one side to another to keep the skin cool, Fuzor metal bonding the skin and others.
After speaking at length to John Alba I decided I wanted to continue the factory look installation and go with spot-welding.
Prior to '55, this is how VW fitted 3-fold's to the oval beetles as there was no factory shelled sunroof beetle.
This meant normal beetle shells had holes cut in them the same way, and had the openings spot welded in from factory the same way we were doing ours.
Of course the later 2-folds weren't done this way, hence why they have corner reinforcing in the roof turrets etc and are actually harder to graft convincingly.
Up on a trailer and off we went to MiColour:
Cleaning up the opening:
A few hours later it was spot-welded in:

First off let me say it looking sweet and great job .
I have few questions to ask.
1st - What are the two vertical cuts in the dash next to the speaker?
2nd - Did the middle hole for the radio get larger, Looks that way in the picture?
3rd - The far left hole in the dash at the radio level, what is that going to be used for?
4th - Are you going to paint the ash tray housing?

Of course, you don't even have to ask. Without your help such a large detail of this build wouldn't have been a reality, so thank you for all your support.

Thank you
1. They actually are a type of rubber pad which allows the radio grill to rest against that, kind of like a spacer and is factory to Aussie assembled beetles. You may not know that the first ovals were called CKD or 'Complete Knock Down' and were shipped here in kit from, and assembled locally, so they can be slightly different to USDM vehicles.
2. This is the standard size for our Aus radio openings, I was actually concerned also until I went and checked online for oval radio openings!
3. That is a good question as I thought it was a factory RHD arrangement. Compared to this UK RHD dash it seems the same? I will check though as it does have the appearance of a factory hole?
4. Ash tray housing has been painted. _________________ www.dinography.com.au - Dino!

Today, we were back in the shop at 7am and getting ready to do the outside of the hang on panels.
Damo fine tuned a few very minor spots here and there that he wasn't 100% happy with and gave them a light rub and prepsol.
Primed and ready for base coat:
Base coat:
Finally it was clear coat time! I'll let the below pics do the talking!

Sorry lads, work has been swamping us in the office, so have been well and truly working for my money this week!
However, Saturday... was a GREAT day as the oval finally came home after 2 years of resto!
I could resist a shot of the body and pan complete with Airevo wheels and tyres, side by side after many years apart
Apologies for the iPhone pics, I got a little excited and forgot to break out the SLR!
Sadly, the shell has to go back to the panel shop on Saturday to rectify a couple of details they overlooked, and then after that is done, the pan heads straight to ACME for Wizards Treatment! _________________ www.dinography.com.au - Dino!

Outstanding work!
I've been back and forth on the color for my '54...black or strato silver (original color). After seeing you photos, I think L227 in Glasurit is the ticket.
Where did you find the exact Glasurit color code for Strato Silver? _________________ My 67 build thread:

Thanks chaps!
vdub8 - It is actually an existing Glasurit color code, just search for L227 and it will come up. _________________ www.dinography.com.au - Dino!
