volkswagen caddy pickup 80 to 83

I just bought a diesel rabbit pickup. The rig's been painted since original and I was wondering if the "volkswagen" stamped out on the tailgate came from the factory painted black/white or if it's "stickers/vinyl?...I've seen the vinyl lettering for sale but i'll tape it off and spray it if that's what's stock...Thanks for any help.

a little late to the party, but they were a decal, in black or white depending on body color

Thanks!...It's a silver ride, so the black lettering is what she needs. Once the bodywork's done and it's been painted. I'll add that to the final touches. : :
