got one for you guys. when i am at idle i hear this strange squeaking sound from the engine compartment like something is rubbing with the fan. it goes away for a bit then comes back like if i am sitting at a light. i am going to take a look at my valve adjustment today if i can just to see if anything is wrong there. runs fine, does not get hot, just this annoying squeaking sound. maybe the rear crossmember? _________________ aircooled for life (1972 squareback cal look) |

How long has it been since you've lubed the distributor shaft? Could be that or a loose tin or heater box skin. That's where I'd start. The fan could have a defect as well; this can cause an intermittent rub/ squeak. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Or one of the bolts has come loose that holds the fan housing?? _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

it happens at idle and yea sounds like what you mentioned with the fan. i have removed the cover from the fan and it looks like it spins true. no weird vibrations or anything like that. as for lubing the dizzy shaft it has a pretronix electronic set up. it is a really weird sound and it freaks the hell out of me just because i always listen to my engines but this is one i can't hunt down. i will take a closer look at it tomorrow. _________________ aircooled for life (1972 squareback cal look) |

You still have to lube the dist even with the conversion. I'm not talking about lubing the points rider, I'm talking about the distributor shaft that the rotor sits on. The bushings in the shaft get dry, and they squeak. Spray a little penetrating oil and let it run down the shaft. Or, use something like 3 in 1 oil. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! The fan is riveted to the hub. The rivets can loosen in time. This happened to me. Mine made more of a knocking than squeaking sound.
My solution was to clean the space between the fan and hub, peen the rivets back down tight, check that the assembly was true and weld the fan to the hub.
Problem solved and in my estimation the assembly construction is better than stock now.
Not that stock is bad. It did last 35 years. |
