i was wondering if anyone one has pictures of dealership spare parts storage areas?

specifically the shelving used to store the vw brown cardboard spare parts boxes?

I have a heap of the boxes and some steel shelving units with spare shelves but was wondering if there was a standard spacing for the shelves? is this covered in the vw printed dealership how to book?

also were there vw printed cards to go in the plastic part number bit?

If you like I can scan in a couple pictures I have in a book at home. It's a book VW put out in the early 60's showing how to set up all facets of a parts department.

I'm sure a number of us would find it interesting, Alan. Please do. Smile

thanks anchovy, that's fascinating. the size of the showroom to the parts and service areas shows how important the after sales support used to be to vw.

alan, that would be awesome.

thanks alan, I was more wondering if there was a suggested shelf spacing for the individual shelf units specifically used for the 4 by 4 1/4 by 12" parts boxes.

the boxes I have were in a shelving unit previously used at one of the dealers in the area. when the guy that had them moved, I got a heap of the boxes but he kept some and the shelving unit.
now that I have bought some of the same gray steel shelving plus enough spare shelves to replicate the unit the boxes were originally in, I want to re-create it. the problem being I didn't think to measure or take a picture of the shelving at the time.

yes I could easily just pick a shelf spacing that would work, but I know that if I later found there was a factory specified spacing and I got it wrong, it would bug me until I pulled it all apart and rebuilt it to vw spec. Rolling Eyes

I wholly approve of your efforts. I'm as pedantic as you are. Wink

That said, I can also admit, with a rather large & knowing grin, that we are a bunch of nutters. Laughing

In the early days, they did not use the cardboard parts boxes. VW recommended to use steel shelving.

Looks like we have the same book! Mine is from the early 60's, as I don't see a specific date. But When cars are shown I see nothing with the mid-64 on wider plate housing and front signals. Also the racks of pressed Bus bumpers and whatnot suggest it's earlier, but who knows. I did see Type 3 fenders with holes for wraparound front signals though.

thanks.

I keep looking at the pictures and plans and pipe dreaming of having a dealership complete with literature, tools and a full parts room. of course with the knowledge of how to use it all.
just repurpose a few service bays for cleaning, dis-assembly, body work, assembly and a spray booth.

it would take some of the challenge out of building a VW but...
