Is a 72 type 3 engine set up to add a remote oil cooler without drilling the block....I have the engine and the cooler...why not add it if there are fittings.......Note...this is NOT a stock vehicle _________________ 63 two fold rag

Hey mate I'm not an expert on this subject but I think they call that a bypass installation which is different to a full flow install which requires tapping the block. Check out cb performance website they have a few adapters on there. One mounts under the filter and others require you to remote mount the filter. _________________ Sydney, Australia.

bypass cooler. Adapter for a type 4 ( mine came from Boatyard Busses), remove stock cooler, bolt on adapter, run lines, install cooler. Aaron B (panel van nirvana) did this & I have a similar set up that I am putting on. Looks good & from what Aaron said runs cool. Good luck. pm me & I will see if I can find my notes on this |

Your welcome. Thank-you for the effort on your build. I hope when I hit the grandpa stage I am still kicking it as hard. Cheers |

A '73 Type 3 engine is not setup with provisions to add an external oil cooler. The block needs to be drilled. And I don't think many (if any) of the other "bolt-on" type solutions will really work on a type 3 due to the engine layout. _________________ Joe P.

If you remove the stock cooler & install a bypass plate to remote cooler. I do not think Grandpa is installing a filter. If that is the case the block would have to be drilled & tapped & then run lines for the filter & cooler |

...eyetzr ; That looks like a bolt on adapter ....Is t made for Type 3 ?...where is it available ?.....How much ? ........what else might I need besides hose and fittings.....I have the " cooler "... thks
Does anyone know what temp difference I could expect from adding an "adapted " oil cooler as opposed to drilling and ful flo,ing one ? _________________ 63 two fold rag

What is the reason for the external cooler? The are a lot of people that run the factory cooler on much larger engines without issue. I used to live down there in Bradenton, FL and never had an issue with my Squareback in the heat. _________________ Joe P.

I got mine from Neil at Boatyard Buses. I think that any of the parts guys would have it. It is a bolt on part, just need hoses and a cooler. I have the same question as Gti, why the need for the cooler? I am changing the cooling tlns on my square, so that is why I am changing mine. I think you should have enough air flow with the looks of your build. |

I know very little about these t3 cars.......When I took the squareback apart there was an oil filter and an oil cooler mounted but disconnected........I am asking questions to find out weather it is a good idea to put them back in the oil circuit and how involved it would be...That's why the original question about ful flo......with input from owners like you I can make an informed decision......Thanks for helping me with this _________________ 63 two fold rag

Since it was already installed, then the engine itself might already have the fittings needed to run the external cooler and oil filter. Look up near the engine hanger bar behind the big cooling shroud on the left side of the engine, to see IF there are any fittings there (that just need hoses added). If there aren't any fittings, then the engine probably got changed before you bought the car.
But, IF you have the fittings installed, then YES, it's a good idea to install the filter and cooler (especially the filter at a minimum). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Unless the temps go too high, why bother with an aftermarket cooler system. . . Having too cool of oil is as bad as too hot. Unless it's needed, it's just wasted money. _________________ Regards,

.............Thanks Bobnotch !!!
I found a single 3/4 inch wide flat plug with a screwdriver slot in it between the flat louvered bottom of the oilpan and the rear mounted cooling fan.
..This looks like the ful flo fittings I have seen on Bug engines (outlet ? )..
....Where would the second plug ( inlet ? ) be on this engine ? _________________ 63 two fold rag

I think you are seeing the pressure relief valve cap.
I got a bad feeling about this... |

I agree with Phil, I think you're looking in the wrong spot. Here's a link with some "full flow" pics that might give you a better idea of what you're looking for.

And I only mentioned that it MIGHT have been converted, due to this pic.
Because, it looks like it's been a while since it's actually been used. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

After rejecting the $72 custom adapter I decided to go with a type 1 adapter . I was able to get an adaptor to put an oil pressure switch on the new lines .
I have everything I need ;
photos when I get it assembled _________________ 63 two fold rag
