Well the Bay has more advanced suspension than the Corvette...

Four years ago I went to Hua-Lien, Taiwan to visit my wife's family. Prior to going there, I checked out Google Earth of the neighbourhood. Spotted a decrepit looking Beetle on Google Street. My father in law was surprised when I said I wanted to take a picture of the rotten VW down the street... Anyway the first picture was taken in 2010...

The second picture is from April of 2014. A bit of a death foam problem going on...

The back story is this car belonged to the lady's husband and he parked it there one night and died. That was about 25 years ago. The car was kept for sentimental reasons and it has not been touched since. High humidity and salty air equals LOTS of rust! The next typhoon will probably remove the door completely! The car had a lot of modifications done to it so the exact year is hard to pin down. Anyone want to take a guess???

That is an excellent pair of photos. You need to ask the in-laws to take a photo of it every six months so we can watch is disappear.

Those rear quarter vents started in 72 ( I think) so it is at least that late. Hard to tell anything else to nail it down closer.

But I will apoint also 1972, at least, because of the size of the back window...

Looks like 71 was the start of quarter vents for US bound cars from what I can find. Maybe that was different for other export markets.

I am thinking that this might actually be a Mexican Beetle. They were common in Taiwan at one time. The Mexi-bugs I saw there often featured green tinted windows like this example. This one likely has had earlier rear fenders and lights installed. Hard to tell what the vents look like under that "nice" rain deflector and it they look original or not. We may never know... The owner is quite elderly now so the car is unlikely to exist too much longer....

A field of VW's being cleared out. The weeds had been freshly hacked away otherwise these pictures would not have been possible...

This '64 deserves a better fate... Lack of paperwork is the problem...

What's the story with those ? Most seem to be in decent shape. I'd drag that '64 home and worry about the paperwork later, just see if you can get a bill of sale. Things can be done to get titles.

I see a late westy way in the background too.

These vehicles belonged to a guy who once ran a VW based business in repairs and "restoration". At one time well known, his real job took away more time from his VW "hobby" job and he shut down the workshop years ago. These VW's are what remained. Most are FAR worse than they look and are barely shells. The '64 was a customer car who never paid for work and never returned. This is why paperwork is an issue. Otherwise that car would and should be scooped up fast...

He should be able to do a mechanics lien or an abandoned title or something along those lines.

Most of the remaining cars in the field have a flat price of $500. The "owner" knows the '64 is significantly better condition then all the rest and he is asking a lot in my opinion. He wants out of it what was owed for repairs. The number being thrown around seems to be $2500. The car has its plus points of being relatively solid and unmessed with. The engine is missing without explanation of what happened to it. The right heater channel has rust and really should be replaced as well. Otherwise it seems complete and for some reason the front seats have been stored indoors. Keep in mind if there was not paperwork issues, this car would have been long gone to local buyers already. I really don't know what will happen to it as the field does need to be cleared. The price doesn't seem flexible at this time... Everything is being cleared out this year, the owner has no interest in doing the mechanics lien as the business has been shut down for some time and he wants no more hassles. Like I say if price was cheaper, locals would have taken a chance on it.
