Hello guys,
This is my grandpa's vehicle. VW Beetle 1200. Manufactured in 1959. Two door sedan.

Originally it had a 6V dynamo Bosch LJ/REF 160/6-2500 L4. I think it has 90mm diameter body. Length not sure. Hope the bottom one is it.

I am planning to replace it by a 12V alternator. I have found later beetles with 12V alternators but I am not sure about the compatibility. Can you please give me suggestions which alternator may be suitable? It should be dimensionally suitable as well I think. Please if you can give information about where to buy would be very helpful.

you are not going to be able to fit an alternator without major work (that I would not advise)

The alternators are much bigger. they will not fit in the pedistal where your generator currently resides. You can cut the pedistal to fit the larger alternator. I wouldnt suggest it.

You can fit a 12v Porsche 356 generator. It is expensive, but they are 12v. You can have a specialist rebuild your 6v generator to 12v. It may not last very long.

There is not a 12v alternator that will fit your engine directly. Sorry. Most people learn to accept (and eventually like) 6v.

Like Erik wrote, there is no 12v alternator that will fit that stock engine. I purchased a 12V 90mm generator and installed it on my 40hp engine and it works good.

Look through my gallery for a few more pics. Also, use the search function, it's been covered many times before.

Thanks a lot Eric and vdubmyk. Looks like I should stay with the dynamo.
