That was going through my mind as well. I will be robbing the AFM off my '74 parts car and swapping it in, hoping that it's a good one. So, it's supposed to be a 6 pin?. The backfire was quite a loud pop.

Yes- a 6 pin. Rock Auto has a new AFM listed, and the part number on the box and sticker is correct, but it's a 7 pin you'll get which doesn't fit. Rolling Eyes First they tried to tell me that I broke a pin off my plug, then they reluctantly took it back and charged me a restock fee because the "car has been modified" Rolling Eyes ... never mind that there was never a 412 made with seven pins.

I tried to alert them to the fact that their part was misboxed to save them grief on the next one they sell, but they claimed that they had another one and it was seven pin also. Never mind that I did a survey on here and every one of the few responses I got were for six pins and the two NOS ones that were on eBay at the time were six pin units- it was "installer error" and that was that.

They lost my business forever over that one. If not for that your 412 would have a new correct AFM on it already as was my intention. Bastards. Evil or Very Mad

I was going to snag one of the NOS ones after that debacle but they were both gone.

Excellent, thanks! I am thinking that it may be best to have an extra on hand in case the one out of the parts car is FUBAR'd or just as a back up...

Anyway, PM sent to the seller to confirm it's a 6 pin unit.

What's that saying? It's better to look good than to feel good?

NOS AFM ordered and on it's way. I thought it was good insurance in case the one in the parts car is either bad or also incorrect.

While researching availability (nearly nill) and pricing...I found the Pelican Parts website. They are asking $219 for a rebuilt up to $1381 for new...

I guess that is the premium Porsche price. Shocked

Checked the incorrect AFM on the car a few days ago. The flap moves freely. I'm going to move the car to a better place and roll it off the trailer so I can get at the battery. So far, I can get the seat up, but not free of the front pedestal so I can remove it or attach a charger to it.

*Edit* I had totally forgotten about the locking tab lever under the seat. Embarassed

Make sure the fuel pump is running and that you have fuel pressure. Don't forget that the AFM triggers the fuel pump to run.

Well, there was some progress. I swapped in a charged battery today and after 2 bouts of cranking, it fired up and purred like a kitten...for about 5-8 minutes until it started to do the same thing which was run rough, smell a little rich, stumble when the pedal was goosed and then finally quit. I let it sit a few minutes, and then fired it back up, but it ran rough and quit again a few more times after about 30 seconds.

This was all after tightening the positive battery terminal (to the positive cable) as it was loose and re-connect a wire leading to the neg battery strap. There are two other wires under there not connected but that didn't seem to affect it starting and running when cold.

Test your two temp sensors and then pull the vacuum line off the pressure regulator and see if you smell fuel.

I was going to test the temp sensors, I just didn't have my stuff at the time. As the car warmed up, all of a sudden the idle went lower, and lower and then it was running rough. I had thought that sensor(s) could be faulty. It acted a bit like my '75 FI Super did last summer when the Temp Sensor II went on it.

In other news, guess what showed up today!

Asterix the cat taking big whiffs of that NOSty smell.

Just thought of something, Stuper: check thermo time switch also. Maybe it's staying "on" after the engine is warm.

Both these two wires (brown and brown/white) are for the diagnosis socket so no one of them has to be in use .

Thanks! I'll just move them out of the way then and no longer worry about them. I compared them to my '73 and on it, one of the wires was attached to a spot where the neg cable is attached to the body, and the other was laying by the battery. No such tab exists on this '74.

I sorted through my Type 4 parts haul tonight and found about 8 TTS's. If it tests bad, at least I won't have to buy a new one or have to remove one from a parts car. I noticed as well that at least 1 new temp sensor is in a package that came with the car.

BTW, where did you find the chrome exhaust extension?

Finally installed the correct AFM on the 412 today. The incorrect one was held on by sheer luck. There must have been air leaks all around it. 4 out of the 5 bolts that hold it to the filter housing were missing. Luckily I found 4 more in the massive stash of bolts, washers and things we have in bins. I installed it back in the car, and tested the TSII while cold and it read 0.0. I started the car up, and it ran rough right off the bat. I was thinking "Oh great!", but after a minute it smoothed out and was running better than ever. I didn't want to get my hopes up so I left it running to warm up, ever once in while testing to see if it would stumble when I goosed the gas a bit. It didn't skip a beat.
With some confidence, I decided to drive it around the yard a bit, and that is where I jinxed myself. After the 3rd lap, almost like a switch, it started missing, chugging and died. It would restart and run badly for about 5 seconds and quit. I tested the TSII again and it still read 0.0.

Soooo, while it runs better than it has before (when cold), I still have the same issue. Next up is testing the TTS and the coil. I ran out of time today so it will have to wait till next time.

I did however, manage to change out the RR taillight housing for one what would hold the turn signal lens on. In the process of taking it off the car, I found even more wasp nests inside the rear fender by the taillights. I found 2 more at the bottom of the doors at the a-pillar. Very large ones.

Pics to come.

Laughing I'm finding them everywhere! Behind headlight doors, fenders, between front fenders and front doors, etc. I know that wasps and bees are attracted to bright colours, and yellow especially. Maybe this is the reason the car was/is infested. Thank goodness they are dead though. I've cleaned out hundreds of bodies from this car.

No wonder we have hardly any yellowjackets this year! Shocked

You should have seen the one I liquidated under the lip of the front hood. It was about 8" long and just full of them. It was about 30 degrees out when i discovered it. I'm very lucky they were "groggy".

On your running problem, I'm wondering if it's your temp sensor. Resistance needs to vary with temp.
