That was going through my mind as well. I will be robbing the AFM off my '74 parts car and swapping it in, hoping that it's a good one. So, it's supposed to be a 6 pin?. The backfire was quite a loud pop. |
Yes- a 6 pin. Rock Auto has a new AFM listed, and the part number on the box and sticker is correct, but it's a 7 pin you'll get which doesn't fit. First they tried to tell me that I broke a pin off my plug, then they reluctantly took it back and charged me a restock fee because the "car has been modified" ... never mind that there was never a 412 made with seven pins.
I tried to alert them to the fact that their part was misboxed to save them grief on the next one they sell, but they claimed that they had another one and it was seven pin also. Never mind that I did a survey on here and every one of the few responses I got were for six pins and the two NOS ones that were on eBay at the time were six pin units- it was "installer error" and that was that.
They lost my business forever over that one. If not for that your 412 would have a new correct AFM on it already as was my intention. Bastards.
I was going to snag one of the NOS ones after that debacle but they were both gone. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Make sure the fuel pump is running and that you have fuel pressure. Don't forget that the AFM triggers the fuel pump to run. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Well, there was some progress. I swapped in a charged battery today and after 2 bouts of cranking, it fired up and purred like a kitten...for about 5-8 minutes until it started to do the same thing which was run rough, smell a little rich, stumble when the pedal was goosed and then finally quit. I let it sit a few minutes, and then fired it back up, but it ran rough and quit again a few more times after about 30 seconds.
This was all after tightening the positive battery terminal (to the positive cable) as it was loose and re-connect a wire leading to the neg battery strap. There are two other wires under there not connected but that didn't seem to affect it starting and running when cold.

Test your two temp sensors and then pull the vacuum line off the pressure regulator and see if you smell fuel. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Just thought of something, Stuper: check thermo time switch also. Maybe it's staying "on" after the engine is warm. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Both these two wires (brown and brown/white) are for the diagnosis socket so no one of them has to be in use .

I sorted through my Type 4 parts haul tonight and found about 8 TTS's. If it tests bad, at least I won't have to buy a new one or have to remove one from a parts car. I noticed as well that at least 1 new temp sensor is in a package that came with the car.
BTW, where did you find the chrome exhaust extension? |
Ancient Chinese secret... aka I don't remember! Maybe it was NavyGeneral. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Finally installed the correct AFM on the 412 today. The incorrect one was held on by sheer luck. There must have been air leaks all around it. 4 out of the 5 bolts that hold it to the filter housing were missing. Luckily I found 4 more in the massive stash of bolts, washers and things we have in bins. I installed it back in the car, and tested the TSII while cold and it read 0.0. I started the car up, and it ran rough right off the bat. I was thinking "Oh great!", but after a minute it smoothed out and was running better than ever. I didn't want to get my hopes up so I left it running to warm up, ever once in while testing to see if it would stumble when I goosed the gas a bit. It didn't skip a beat.
With some confidence, I decided to drive it around the yard a bit, and that is where I jinxed myself. After the 3rd lap, almost like a switch, it started missing, chugging and died. It would restart and run badly for about 5 seconds and quit. I tested the TSII again and it still read 0.0.
Soooo, while it runs better than it has before (when cold), I still have the same issue. Next up is testing the TTS and the coil. I ran out of time today so it will have to wait till next time.
I did however, manage to change out the RR taillight housing for one what would hold the turn signal lens on. In the process of taking it off the car, I found even more wasp nests inside the rear fender by the taillights. I found 2 more at the bottom of the doors at the a-pillar. Very large ones.
Pics to come. _________________ 1970 Campmobile Click to view image

Looks like part of the catalysator has fallen off...

I'm finding them everywhere! Behind headlight doors, fenders, between front fenders and front doors, etc. I know that wasps and bees are attracted to bright colours, and yellow especially. Maybe this is the reason the car was/is infested. Thank goodness they are dead though. I've cleaned out hundreds of bodies from this car. |
No wonder we have hardly any yellowjackets this year!
You should have seen the one I liquidated under the lip of the front hood. It was about 8" long and just full of them. It was about 30 degrees out when i discovered it. I'm very lucky they were "groggy".
On your running problem, I'm wondering if it's your temp sensor. Resistance needs to vary with temp. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
