What sort of urban legends, and universal truths have you heard about Volkswagens in general that either turned out to be true, or ended up being hogwash?

For me, it seems every time I mention we're running the 1835 that came with the bus, someone says, "I don't like those, the cylinder walls are too thin".

Is that just an oft repeated rumor that impending doom is part and parcel of 1835 ownership, or hogwash? What about other "truths" that seem to permeate the hobby?

92mm cylinder(1835 ones) are 90.5 cylinders that are machine out to fit 92mm pistons
so yes are thinner and some have been known to overheat and some don't
but I think this has more to do with who and how the engine was build and who and ho the person who owns it drives the vehicle it is in Wink

there are lots of vw "myths" that I know of but every time I post them on there are 20 members or keyboard mechanics to say how wrong I am Wink

I'm pretty sure we all heartily embrace out own myths and freely and loudly proclaim our expertise right here on the Samba. So your asking the originators of the bull to tell you how to tell when it's bull?

Just pay attention to who posts what and you'll figure out who knows there shit and who's full of shit.

The biggest myth of all time has to be the guy who swears his Uncle's VW came from the factory with a Porsche engine in it.

my wife always tells me I shouldn't drive my car because it's old and I'll ruin it.

I never listen.

"You don't need a thermostat in warm climates"

"Old VWs are cheap to run."

"They are as safe as new cars if you drive carefully."

"That'll buff out."

All false:
The heat doesn't work (True below 0 degrees or so)
They break down all the time
The brakes are unsafe
They have to warm up first before taking off

And similar things related to the owner not taking care of their car properly or parts missing.

"I get 35mpg out of my 1835...."

Fiction, unless you are going down a 35 mile hill and have your motor shut off for the last 10 miles.
