I did. I wasn't ok with the size of the wire or the mounting of the rack. Those sound like petty reasons but I was getting frustrated with it. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

Im so close to having the wiring done. I got to finish up the grounding circuits, wire in the relay/fuse rack, and run a few wires to the front for gauges and lights.
Im really starting to grow weary of this crap. Getting the exhaust done was a nice little perk, but it was short lived when i had to get back into wiring.
Im thinking after wiring im going to set up my new tube bender (which hasn't even come out of the box in the month that its been at my house) and make the rear bumper so i can mount the radiator. On the other hand, i was considering maybe mounting the radiator to the body instead of the bumper. Yes, it makes more sense to mount the radiator to the sturdy tubes right under it, but if i need to take my bumper off for what ever reason i wouldn't have to remove the radiator too.
I guess ill cross that bridge when i get there. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

I think an ammo box is a great idea. For my rig im not putting it in a box though. I know it would be a little safer but since its already inside, im not too worried about it getting wet. I do plan to make a cover for it though, just so its a little protected for when i throw shit in the back, like fire wood and dumb drunk people.

I finished up the relay and fuse rack today! cleaned up the wiring inside the car by zip tying as much as i could together with out getting too fancy and trying to untangle it. I dont think thats ever going to happen, but i get a little carried away thinking about how nice it would be if it were all untangles and seperated. But really, its going to be covered in a loom so it dosnt really matter.
Tomorrow after work im going to hopefully do the check engine light, tach wire, alternator light, a wire that goes to the starter solinoid, a "hot at all times" wire, ignition on wire water temp sensor and i think thats.
Then i have to connect the fuel lines from the metal lines coming out of the body to the engine, put new intake manifold gaskets on and tighten it down, add some oil and try to start it.
Being that it doesnt have a cooling system yet, and im not sure if there is even water inside the block, its not going to run long. Just a few rpm's and ill be happy. The engine was throwing a few codes when i last heard it ran/drove it, but they were pretty simple things and it still started.
Heres some pics of the progress:

just thinking those spade connectors under that fuse block might need some shrink wrap covers on them. With my luck I'd drop a screwdriver on them and poof!. Unless their grounds of course.
I'm jealous of your progress, I've really lost momentum in my own. Wishing I had a Baja to hide all my sensitive things inside instead of making mounts all over a frame to hold them...
I like how you kept everything tidy in that corner. _________________ Brian H.

I was thinking about how to mount my radiator without permanently attaching it t the bumper. What if you make a hoop assembly that can bolt to the 2.2 factory motor mount spots, then make your own hoop assembly that the radiator can mount to. Then when the bumper is installed make brackets that bolt the two together. That way its self supporting for working on but uses the bumper for rigidity when driving _________________ my build page http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=536267 |

The shrink wrap is a good idea, although they are all power so arcing across them wouldn't be bad. But color coding them to the fuse color would be helpful.
I got an idea for the radiator. It's a little hard to explain so I'll let the pics show how it's done when I get it done. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

I fixed the possible short at the fuse problem with some shrink wrap. It looks good, thanks for the thought.
Last night i decided to pull the motor and trans before getting the motor too connected to everything. Im glad i did! I forgot that the CV joint bolts wernt tightened very much (though i did leave my self a note on the windshield about that, gotta love sticky notes), the trans bolts wernt even in all the way, and the shift rod wasnt fully welded. I added some rubber "bushings" (made out of rubber tubing cut in half) to the metal fuel line mounts to help keep them from rattling.
(I stopped the metal fuel lines where they are for a reason if you are wondering. In case the rubber line slips off, it will be squirting fuel out the side of the car, not at the engine where there is a greater possibility of ignition and my car going up in flames)
Made a small patch for the hole that was cut open to get the front transmission mount welded in place. I cant see it as being much for structural support, more of just keeping waster and mud out of the tunnel
Finally found what i was looking for as far as a Check engine light goes. I wanted something pretty small but bright. Found it at radio shack. Man, i could geek out in there for hours with all the electrical stuff they have!
I also made this cover for the bell housing side of the motor. I think its only engines that are bolted up to auto transmissions, but its for access to the flex plate/torque converter bolts. I didnt want a bunch of mud getting in there.
Tomorrow im going to keep working on little things as they come up. Id like to get the trans installed and i might recruit a friend to come over and help me put the motor back in. Its weird having to have a friend help me with that now. Before, with the air cooled piece, it was a lot more simple. Ohh well, now its a two person job. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

good work. I hear ya about Radio Shack. Used to be practically their whole store was full of that stuff but since they started focusing on cell phones and crap their electronic components stock has really suffered (to the point I won't bother anymore). _________________ Brian H.

I got a few things done this weekend. Got to work on it all Saturday and all of today. I turned the ignition on for the first time and was thrilled to see all the dash lights come on and the fuel pump cycle. Then i tried to turn it off and it didnt turn off. A few hours of head scratching, reading over the wiring schematics and tracing wires i narrowed it down to one wire. I wasnt dead positive i should cut that wire. It was kind of like having to decide which wire to cut to disarm a bomb and knowing you kind of only have one chance. I bit the bullet, cut it, and the ignition turned off. I get to live another day!
Then, i got to fire it up today. I only let it run for about 3 seconds then shut it off bc there is no radiator and im not sure if there is even water in the water jackets surronding the cylinders. So i didnt want to risk it. But it was really great to hear it come to life finally!
That really got me motivated to get the radiator done. But to mount the radiator i have to make my rear bumper, and to do that i have to assemble and mount my tube bender, and to do that i have to get steel and fabricate fabricate a stand. So i play the waiting game. Im going to get the steel tomorrow and hopefully will have it fabricated by tomorrow night. I can probably assembly the bender too. I guess i should also buy tubing for the bumper since im going to be there.
Lots to do and little time to do it in. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

I took a bit of a short cut at far as fabbing a stand goes. I have one that I forgot about. My friend bought me a Harbor Freight bar bender a while ago thinking I could bend tubing with it. Obviously you can't, but it was a very nice jesture. So I realized that it has a stand that will work perfectly. My next step it to drill holes in the garage floor, hammer in some wedge anchors and then I will be ready for some bending time! I already assembled to bender so that part is good to go. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

You got the JD2 model, correct?
Prepare to be a little frustrated at first, but you're gonna love being able to make things with that. I only have the Affordable bender which doesn't have as tight CLR's and can't do more than 90* at a time, but I have made a 180*. It's all trial an error but if you pay attention to what you're doing you know what you have to do different when things don't work out like planned. I can't wait to make bumpers and racks and stuff! Gotta make some tree bars some day too. _________________ Brian H.

Yeah i got the jd2 model 3. I could put a hydraulic ram on it some day...
JD2 hooked me up with a short booklet on how to do some simple bends. Right now im not really planning on doing anything that is bent on 3 deminsions, only 2. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.
