|

First of all hello to all, neat site! I am a long time Mopar restoration hobbyist and restoration business owner. I recently looked at a customers Mopar and while there he showed me the 57 VW he was planning to sell. It was purchased new in Spokane All records since new, overall a VERY nice little "Survivor" short of the repaint.
All opinions appreciated!
Thanks!
Scott

My first advise would be to make sure the body and the pan vin numbers match. If they do then go from there. Look for pan or heater channel rust. I would not worry to much about the paint at this point. I would make sure you are getting a good solid number matching car.
Good Luck... _________________ 1956 Oval |

I will definitely check the numbers but from what he already told me it's 100% original numbers matching everything. Could you post any pictures of where the numbers you mentioned are located? |

The pan vin number will be under the rear seat on the tunnel. The number for the body there will be a tag riveted to the body. This tag is in the front of body were the spare tire would go. You can check this site under the technical for all the vin number information you will need. _________________ 1956 Oval

Ok, thanks for the help. So I'd need to remove the rear seat to check the tunnel? Is that a difficult/involved job? |

Sounds like a neat car, but also very much a disappointment with the repaint compared to the rest of the description.
The Vw community has an unusually strong affinity for original paint and original colors. That said, some very nice cars with repaints in unoriginal colors can often find themselves in a middle ground between original cars and restoration projects prices.
Check the classifieds for yourself, but keep in mind that many cars are continually relisted for above market prices, while well priced cars sell quickly. Watching the pricing here and on eBay for a few weeks will give a much better idea of value than just checking the listing prices at any given moment.
I recently have been in contact with a member of River City Vw club in your area, many members of that club are very active and knowledgable and maybe can help with specifics of value. I hate to throw out values on cars without info and pics, but this does sound like a nice car for someone |

Not at all...just grab a flash light. You can pull the rear seat up with no tools involved. It just rests on a channel. While you are in there, look under the batttery. This is a common place for rust on the pans. _________________ 1956 Oval |

I 100% agree on the repaint issues. The EXACT same applies to the Mopar hobby (I've owned a few survivors, Cudas, Chargers, Dusters, etc.) and paid a premium for the original paint. Having just gone through getting a car repainted (rotisserie nut and bolt job) I am up on the high cost of quality paint & body work.

Everything is great. It's been parked since 1995 or so and only started on occasion so I took a chance and drove it home across town (about 15 miles). Made the trip fine, discovered an oil leak that made the exhaust smoke pretty badly (a seal between the engine and trans somewhere?). But no drama. I'll be going over everything with a fine tooth comb in the coming weeks. Really nice tight driving little bug! |

Nice find! Originally Diamond Green with the green vinyl interior. Any photos of the interior? Check out my pics in my gallery and you can see what yours would have looked like originally. _________________ ostkuste |

The interior in mine is painted the lima bean green (like the outside was originally) with ivory colored seats and steering wheel |
