I need to draw from your collective knowledge again.
Turns out it's super easy to find Mango green paint using old the old Diltzer and PPG paint codes. Seagull Grey is another matter. I've tried 3 paint suppliers now who are unable to mix the colour using L347, 31889, and even the original paint formula.
All three have said they can scan and match the colour if I have an original sample. I don't...but I also would rather not go that way because i don't want the original mango tone and a faded seagull grey tone.
Does anyone have any advice or has anyone had any success finding a paint supplier that can mix seagull grey?
Thanks again... |

The local paint shop here in Sweden found both Mango and Seagull, although only 1k for the Mango paint but 2k for the Seagull paint.
Did some work on the front, only removed the rusty areas and it blended nicely.

fake? thin lip pass. dogleg, flared rear wheel well. paint colour looks different around rear windows, patina looks faked to me. is that swr coming thru on drivers side? Could be wrong but it looks a bit questionable to me. |

Oh yeah it is so fake, a real hack-job could be in the "Freaks, Frankenbuses and other Works of Art" thread
The first winter picture is from when I bought it just over a year ago, been trying to improve it bit by bit but it won´t be a full resto

Good call Mr. Obus.
Spring has finally come to the frozen northern wasteland, so young Jeff and I are planning a sojourn to the farm to inspect how the feral herd fared the winter.
It was a whirlwind trip to get the Garrick Mango from northern Saskatchewan last fall and I really need to take stock of it from a calmer perspective.
I have been collecting bits and pieces over the winter, but need some face time with it to plan the resurrection.
I'll report back. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

So I've learned much in the last while about vintage paint colours. As some of you may know, getting the L346 Mango Green isn't too problematic although, depending on how careful your dealer is, the actual colour varies from brownish to bright green as you can see throughout this forum. L347 Seagull Grey, or Moewengrau, is a whole other story because, as I've been told, it was only used during 1958-1961. Mango green was apparently used by Chrysler in the 1980s.
I was getting frustrated with all the automotive paint dealers telling me there is no way to mix the Seagull Grey because the tints aren't available. So I went to the source. These busses were painted with a Glasurit single stage lacquer. A quick internet search showed that Glasurit is now owned by BASF. I found a 1-800 number and explained my situation. They advised that I speak to a local BASF paint dealer and ask them to submit a special request for a vintage paint reformulation. I did so and was very happy to find a guy (Kelly from Carlson's Auto Body Supply - Regina, Sask., Canada) who is very passionate about tracking down obscure paint colours. He explained to me that he submitted a request to a European BASF paint lab that can reformulate the paint by re-creating the original tints. Long story short, I got my Seagull Grey and Mango Green and they look perfect. The Seagull grey is that light grey with the most subtle tint of mocha. The base-clear formulas were prohibitively expensive for me...over $2000 for the paint, reducer, and clear. So I opted for a much more reasonably priced modern single-stage formulation. I was given assurances that today's single stage paints are every bit as UV and damage resistant as the base-clears. We'll see. I'll post a pic when it's done.
So if you're looking for paint, talk to your BASF dealer and mention the special request or ask for the regional BASF rep (I actually talked to both). |
