I'll leave you alone and go and bug the guys and gals on the Tire thread as soon as you tell me how to do a bit of wheel care, please!? Or, where such a thread is to ask that question, please!?
I searched curb rash & wheel repair. I swore I read it, probably on someone's own page. He used some sort of sander to smooth it out. I have a regular sander and a dremel. Will that do it? Which bit?
My $66 find.
Did I do good?
Will require spacers & new lugs front and back. And, longer wheel studs back. So another $253.
For a total of $319. Oh, those black tire things, I'll read about on the other thread, sure that'll run me another $400+, not bad though, under $1,000. I'm kidding, someone was kind enough to explain tires to me using short words and now I *think* I understand. Certainly do understand 10x more than I did before!
Will order my spacers from T3 next trip down, as I don't want to pay anymore of that Canadian Tax, it racks up the bill fast! LOL
Oh, then I may need the particulars on getting 12mm holes to be 14mm. Plus someone said something about doing something so the nut (?) sits right? I'm going to go and read all the wheel parts, so i don't sound so dumb. The guy that was selling them to me, was a Toyota Technician, (is that the new word for mechanic?). He was either dumb or thought I was a dumb blond b/c he tried to tell me the curb rash would be covered by the tire. I tried to be nice with my reply b/c the wheels were cheap and said that only works on a bicycle and then pointed to his car wheels w/ the exposed lip.
Thanks! My Vanagon will be very happy with new shoes!

Just received the set of '99 CLK wheels I recently purchased ... will be 'machining' them as needed soon.
EDIT (3/26/14):
Long 14mm lug bolts from a 914 fit through the holes with no binding ... Further investigation confirmed that a PO reamed them out.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT (3/27/14):
I cleaned one wheel up, filed down some curb rash and painted it with Rustoleum High Performance Wheel Paint (#248927 'Steel'), which is a silver metallic paint. I'll decide if I'll do all four after this one dries. I'm also thinking about bead blasting and clear-coating them if I don't like the paint.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was looking at fitting 215/65-16 Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S tires. Anybody here have anything good or bad to say about them?
I have an '84 Westy (if that matters) ... _________________ Mark S.,

Long time lurker showing my appreciation to The Samba community for all the help I have gotten in the past.
The following wheels share the 5X112 lug pattern, and 66.6mm center bore. Not all of these will be usable on the vanagon due to their offset or diameter, but maybe this could help when searching for wheels that can be used with a minimum of modification…i.e. lug resizing. this list is courtesy of wheelfitment.eu. I have no affiliation with them.
Feel free to edit the list if there are wheels on here that you know will not fit.

Found these CLK wheels on Craigslist… but can't seem to find the info for the ET on them. They're on a 2003 Mercedes CLK. Can anyone ID them? Know if they'd fit my 87 GL?
Thanks! |

I've never seen these on a Vanagon or anywhere in this long post. 2005 C Class 16x7 ET 31 apparently, looks like they should fit right on. Anybody know if there is a reason they wouldn't?

Yes, I have helped several people install those wheels. You have to drill out the lug holes, install longer rear wheel studs and run small ball seat lugs front and rear. The front center caps won't fit unless you run a thin spacer or modify the grease caps. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

Thanks Christopher. That sounds pretty minimal on the effort side. Might just have to pick these up. _________________ 1988 GL Camper

Hello Everyone
I have a chance to buy a new set of the rims below at a very good price and was hoping to get some advise on mounting them here. I Would like to put them on a 89 2WD Westfalia. I hope to put them on at the same time as doing some suspensions upgrades ( all new bushings, Lift Springs, new shocks).
I assume I will have to modify the rims and add spacers, just how much and what size I don't know.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I have found a company that sells the equivalent to the mefro wheels that van-cafe sold in the past. Maybe they are the South African Equivalents. I have ordered a set and will be trying them on my van. I was wondering if any of you know what lugs to use? I currently have a set of Porsche Fuchs with adapters on my van so I dont know what was stock and need to change them.

I picked up these Mercedes Ronal rims for my van, trying to find out what I need to fit these to an early van (1980) with or without a big brake kit. (I'm likely to add a DIY brake kit this summer)
should I wait till I upgrade the brakes to buy/fit the adapters? as then my spacing will change the rotor thickness (~8mm)
I don't plan to add rear brake upgrade.
They are:
16X7.5 ET 51 MB part number 1404011402
Made by Ronal in Germany

I am a Newbie who has spent way too much time recently reading through the forum. Great info so thank you
I'm buying an 86 2WD with a 2.2 subaru conversion. The PO was running 15" SA steel wheels, but those aren't coming with the van so I am in search of some new wheels and tires. I found these on CL. Will this work on my Vanagon? What will need to be done to get them to fit? What tires should I run on them? Anything else I should know/ask?

Welcome to the Samba!
Yes, you can use those wheels, but they will require the centerbores to be opened up to 66.56mm and you will not be able to run center caps.
You will also need spacers front and rear, new front lug bolts, new rear wheel studs and a new set of rear lug nuts. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

Without a brake "kit", you would need to use a minimum of 20mm spacers on the front and rear (although 22mm is probably a better choice). There are no lug bolts on the market that fit both the seat and length requirements for those wheels, so you would need to run a set of front conversion studs. Longer rear wheel studs and large ball seat lug nuts all the way around. No wheel modification need to be made, but the Mercedes center caps won't fit, so you would have to go without, use our custom caps or do something custom yourself. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

Christopher,
Thanks for the quick response and info. Could you provide me with the info about the Lug bolts, nuts and studs I will need? Also what size spacers will be needed.
Any recomendations on tires to run?
Thanks |
