I have so many questions. Basically I have a 57 roller. I have the opportunity to purchase a 69 with a 1600 drivetrain. My question really is, can the swap be done. Also, what exactly would I need? I am new to this and very ignorant to beetle running gear. I just want to dot my I's and cross my t's before I make a decision.

yes it can be done but is it worth it no since it will de-value your car also the title and vin# goes with the pan not the body

to make the switch you would have to dis-contact most of the wiring, steering, unbolt the body from the pan, gas tank
also removing the seats, and engine helps but not required

this might be covered in the FAQ's somewhere in one of the beetle sections

If I remember right, its some more work to be done with the pan and/or the body to make them fit. Older 1200 pans are easier to fit.
But keep the original pan if possible, dont make a bastard if you got the real deal.

When you say "'the 69's drivetrain" do you mean that you want to install the 1600 engine and the '69's transmission into your '57? Or do you want to remove the '57's body and mount it onto the entire '69's chassis?
