Help!!! Big noob mistake!!!

Folks, I need help. I have been working on my 1970 Beetle Convertable for some time now and had it just about the entire car down to metal so I can either prime it myself or take it in to be primed.

My issues started at the end of Jan 2014 when my brother suddenly died from a massive heart attack at the age of 49. My throat had been horse for a few months, so because I was scared for myself I went in to get my heart checked out. (I am 45, retired military, married 22 years with 6 kids). Anyway, I had my throat looked at and to make a long story short, I am in treatment now for throat cancer and I am facing my second surgery. (never smoked and do not drink).

Anyway... since I have not touched my car in 3 months I have RUST!!
Not bad rust, but rust everywhere! I am thinking I could go over it again with paper, but bottom line is I need to get it primed. I get tired so easy now, plus facing another surgery and who knows what else.

What can I do to prime it so I can get to it later. Not sure what the next few months have in store for me. Can I take off the surface rust and "rattle can" it with self ething primer? Really don't have the money to send it for priming.

Picklex 20, is the product I used on my 9 year project, couldn't have been happier with the results, I'm sure Eastwood also has products that may do the same thing but I know for a fact this product works , hope this helps and your health improves

If you don't have time to take it back to shiny rust free metal you could remove the rust scale if it got that far then clean and treat with an acid prep and come back later and take to shiny metal or just scuff and shoot a moisture cure urethane over it like POR15 or Master Coat. They do well over rusty and pitted metals. If you decide to go back to shiny metal I would clean and 2K epoxy it...god bless

Sorry to hear and hang in there - remember it's just an old car.

I have used SEM's Rustmort for surface rust - spray on with hand sprayer - let sit overnight, then wash off with water and scuff sand as normal prior to spraying primer. Just be careful, because it will dissolve your concrete garage floor - keep it away from plants, animals, skin, eyes, concrete, etc.

go check with a body shop near by and ask how much it would be to just shoot a coat a primer on the car. Not to prep it but to just spray it to keep from rusting.

One trick is to ask to talk with the painter. see if he dose side jobs. If you have a compressor he could spray it at your place. Just save up some news papers and get some tape to help in masking windows and trim.

Por-15 metal prep will hold off rusting till you are ready to work on it again, as long as it is stored indoors. It also removes light flash rust. You only have to brush it on. It is watery and has virtually no build. Good luck.
